Please ignore that we need to clean up a bit, so I can show you this raspberry patch. As you can see, it's not very large. From this patch, and despite our laziness because at some point every summer we just give up and say it's enough, we ended up with 17.3 lbs, or 8-2qt bags and a 2.5 qt bag. We freeze, vacuum seal and store for later in amounts large enough to make 1 batch of jam per bag. Not too shabby. Yay future jam!

Well, things around here have been busy. Ive been canning up a storm and put up a bushel of tomatoes, a half bushel of apples, bushel of peaches almost, 15 lbs of cabbage became sour kraut, and frozen some green peppers. Tons of jam and jelly. Nothing grew as we expected, and though all the plants looked great, we just haven't seen the normal yield. Its ok, thats how it goes some years. We're still getting tomatoes and peppers, there's a few pumpkins, beans, brussels are forming, broccoli still throwing out bits. We're only a few weeks from first frost and we are winding down early because we're taking off for a much needed vacation. Pulled the potatoes today. Will try to circle back, there's lots more to take photos of on this equinox eve.

The first two are what Robert picked in the 4 days I was away. To be fair, i did pick anything even 1/2 ripe before I left. The rest is what I just picked as I got home today. Guess im cooking all weekend again. For those who ask, when will things ripen? We've been waiting and everything is green.... This is how it happens. All at once!

I worked this weekend and was away overnight, so I didn't make it into the garden at all until this (Monday) morning. This is the time of year that ALL the critters attempt to eat everything, so it's time to BOTL for creepy crawlies and uninvited guests. I immediately noticed a sign that something was present. After many years of knowing to expect them, August is officially hornworm month. Usually, im looking for a branch stripped of leaves, and then try to follow the path until I see frass (worm p**p), which is green and square, and almost looks like a Lego. When the worm is small, the frass is equally small. The bigger it gets, the more I gag ๐Ÿ˜…. Anyway, these guys are also masters of camouflage, so you'll see me bobbing up and down looking at different angles for a hefty guy , who once you spot is completely obvious, but you can't see at all until after. Some people pick them off, but there's zero chance its me ๐Ÿ˜†. I cut the whole branch and drop him onto a shovel. I typically relocate to an area where the birds can get him or he can go his own way. They do turn into cool looking moths, and as long as he's away from my food, im all about live and let live.

Nasturtium flower for attention (pretty aren't they?) We have our second round of cucumber growing under netting. The first ones, all 10, were slowly dismantled, leaves and stems randomly getting broken off, but not eaten. Recently, I uncovered the second round, which is climbing a trellis. They were uncovered for less that a week, and I went outside this morning to find several leaves and stems broken off. Its not at the bottom of the plants, and most survived, so i covered them back up. My first guess was birds, but it could be anything. Whatever is doing this is not eating the pieces. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? And why? We leave water out in a other area for critters. We have 2 other plants, 500 or so feet away, uncovered and in the open that nothing has bothered.

Things here are finally showing real progress. Today, after a short delay for my rabbit friends to clear out, I pulled the garlic. Im under impressed with the softnecks, and after many years, im throwing in the towel on it. However, our hardneck porcelain varieties did outstanding. Some heads are 5inches! More of that in the future! Tomatoes are pumping, head broccoli seems like its probably time today or tomorrow. Cauliflower seems like it isn't nearly as developed. Not sure what to think, but its not in the way so we will watch it. I replaced the garlic with bush beans, and ill plant again in a few weeks. The cucumbers I re_planted look lush. There were also some Gherkin and Mexican sour Gherkin i planted in another spot, and those seem happy. I replanted the pole beans that the rabbits took. Squash, watermelon, and pumpkin are starting to look like they are growing, after what felt like a long time with tiny plants. I did see a squash vine borer flying around, so nows the time to keep an eye on it. I've seen just a few cucumber beetles this year. Last year we sprayed with beneficial nematodes, and I do think it seems like it helped. Now to keep an eye out for the dreaded squash bugs ๐Ÿคžto arrive. Early detection is everything ๐Ÿ™Œ. Gladiolus are beginning to flower once we excluded the rabbits from munching all the leaves. Who knew they liked them? Grapes filling out. So far, they seemed plump and healthy.

The raspberries are here! Since Sunday evening, or about 35 hours, we have already picked 4 quarts. I picked one this morning before leaving for work, and will likely need to donit again tonight. It will crank like this for the next week to 10 days, and then its all gone. This is why we pick and freeze.

Today I had off, so I made strawberry jam and peach barbecue sauce, strawberry syrup, and Bob worked on blocking off the cucumber and eggplant from the rabbits. Im not sure if its them, the groundhog, or insects that skirted the fence for the broccoli, but im guessing rabbits since its only on the outer, tallest growing perimeter. I took the time to treat the broccoli, pumpkin, squash, zuchinni and cucumber with BT, an organic insecticide derived from the bacteria at the bottom of rum casks, which triggers worms and beetles to stop eating. Safe for bees. I rarely treat if I can help it, but I suspect an influx of cucumber beetles and squash bugs with the hot, humid weather coming. ๐Ÿคž
