Bringing Max Home - Fighting Type 1 Diabetes Join this page and also visit www.bringingmaxhome.com to DONATE Max is Carter's diabetic alert dog.

Our goal is to raise $18,000 to get Max from All Purpose Canines (Ranger, Tx) to Savannah by the end of the Spring of 2017. He scents dangerously low/high blood sugars and is a tool our family can use to prevent life-threatening complications of this disease. Here is what your dollars will cover:
-The cost of Max and his veterinary care
-The cost of 2 years of intensive training
-Travel costs to f

ly Carter and his parents to Texas for 1 week of training prior to bringing Max home
-Service Dog Certification supplies

I like to make sure that people know that even things like a common cold or mild infection can wreak havoc on blood sugars. Here's the dexcom over the past 24 hours (snotty and soar throat w/ mild temp). So many lows.

And...it's for that reason that Max gets to leave the comfort of his usual sleeping quarters to sleep first class tonight. He's still working off his debt.

Teaching a dog to alert is a long process! We spent much of yesterday working on transitioning Max from Carter's "collected" scent to his scent. Here's a clip of him working with the trainer in the hotel yesterday morning. Max usually gets in a pointer stance, stares and then 'bumps' (a much less aggressive way to alert) Carter with his nose when he smells either a drop in blood sugar or an actual low. In this particular clip he's bumping (alerting) to a cloth in the tube that contains a scent collected several weeks ago when Carter was very low.

Well, it's day 3 in Texas. We have Max! He slept in our hotel room for the first time last night and did great. Yesterday was an interesting day. Max alerted 4 times for a low blood sugar (once for a major drop in blood sugar). It's pretty amazing to watch. I suppose I expected fireworks and a dog-and-pony show each time but a fixed stare, a slow walk over to Carter, and a gentle "nose bump" on Carter's leg said, "Hey kid...you smell bad...check your sugar". We walked in/out of 5 different stores, a hotel, and a public park. Carter led well and Max followed. It's certainly not perfect and there are definitely obstacles to overcome but they're a great team...a boy and his dog! I've attached a video of their first meeting.

So excited!!! Stay tuned for updates as Carter brings Max home!!

And we're off!!! Today is the day! On the plane RIGHT NOW! Carter and I are very emotional and excited this morning. So many struggles, so much support...been waiting for this day for a long time! Thank you again for helping make this possible. I'll say it one more time: Whether it was a $5 cash donation, a $20 dinner, an unexpected conversation and $100 check or if you're my family and decided to 'go big or go home' (thanks dad)...we're so grateful. This disease is awful. I pray that this new journey gives our family and Carter a bit more peace during the difficult moments. Another tool in the diabetes toolbelt.

Stay connected to FB over the next 8 days. I'll be posting updates with video and photos.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the Bringing 'Carrabba's To-Go' Home fundraiser dinner yesterday. We sold way more dinners than expected and raised quite a bit of money. Carter wanted to take a few minutes before school today and make a 'thank you' video for everyone. 14 more days until we get Max!

Thank you to Carrabba's Italian Grill and Chris Martindale for pulling off such a seamless event and for your commitment to community. So grateful for you all.
