On August 17, K9 Officer Azula of the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office was injured in the line of duty during a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two officers.

Thanks to the partnership between Intermountain Health and MedVet, Azula became the first K9 to be airlifted through this program designed to provide rapid, specialized care for public safety animals.

Upon arrival, Drs. Katherine Dawson and Jordan Scherk, along with the MedVet Salt Lake City team, had lifesaving supplies and interventions ready, from blood products to chest tubes. Thankfully, Azula’s injuries were less severe than feared, and after attentive care she has returned to training with her partner, Deputy Mike Allred.

We are proud of our MedVet caregivers and grateful for the collaboration with Intermountain Life Flight that made this possible. It is an honor to serve our community and support the brave K9s who risk their lives alongside first responders.

MedVet Salt Lake City and MedVet Northern Utah are certified to receive and provide care for public safety dogs via the Intermountain Health K9 Transport Program. Learn more about this program: https://hubs.la/Q03JbS_W0

We asked Dr. Tiffany Elgersma, an Emergency Medicine Veterinarian at MedVet Diley Hill, to share the story of an ER patient she’ll never forget. She shared the story of Mr. Doobie, who she treated for rat bait poisoning.

From unexpected twists to incredible recoveries, these moments remind us why we do what we do. Listen to her story and see how expert care, quick action, and a whole lot of heart can make all the difference. 💙

After a spirited play session with his housemate, Axel’s family noticed something unusual: his tail looked a little bent. Worried it might be broken, they brought him to MedVet Vancouver's ER for evaluation.

Our ER team made sure Axel was comfortable and gave him a thorough checkup. The best news? His tail should heal on its own, and he’ll be back to happy wags in no time!

We’re excited to share that Dr. Carrie Breaux, Veterinary Ophthalmologist, is now seeing patients at WestVet Meridian!

With nearly 20 years of experience providing advanced ophthalmic care in The Treasure Valley, Dr. Breaux is dedicated to helping pets with both complex surgical cases (such as cataracts and glaucoma) and chronic eye conditions like dry eye (KCS) or Pannus.

Her move from WestVet Boise to WestVet Meridian means we now offer Ophthalmology services at two convenient locations: Boise and Meridian. This expansion allows even more pets and families in our community to access specialized eye care close to home.

When not in the hospital, Dr. Breaux can often be found outdoors with family, friends, and her horses.

Puppies sure can keep us on our toes! Banks, a 3-month-old Golden Retriever, came to MedVet Norwalk's ER after his family noticed he wasn’t himself and was passing unusual material in his stool. A little detective work revealed the culprit: foam golf balls!

Radiographs showed pieces in his stomach, and with the risk of obstruction too great, Dr. Marjorie Owen and our Surgery team stepped in. They successfully removed foam from about six golf balls. Thanks to expert surgery, careful anesthesia, and close ICU monitoring, Banks was soon back on his paws and wagging his tail. 💛

Let this be a reminder: puppies love to chew and sometimes swallow things they shouldn’t. If you ever suspect your pet has eaten something unusual, don’t wait! Seek veterinary care right away.

Mikey, an 8-year-old pug, faced a scary emergency when he was hit by a car and suffered multiple pelvic fractures. He was first treated at a local emergency hospital, but his care team knew he needed advanced surgical expertise to give him the best chance at recovery. That’s when he was referred to MedVet Vancouver.

When Mikey arrived, our Emergency doctors sprang into action, making sure he stayed comfortable and stable leading up to surgery. From there, our Board-certified Surgeons carefully reviewed his complete medical history, made a specialized anesthetic plan in collaboration with our Anesthesiologist, repaired his pelvis with precision, and provided the specialized care he needed.

Mikey’s journey is a great example of how MedVet works hand-in-hand with referring veterinarians and emergency hospitals 🤝. Together, we make sure pets get the right care, at the right time.

When you’re this cute, it’s only natural to get promoted to front desk helper! Nala stopped by MedVet Diley Hill with her mom, and while she waited, she filled in as our newest Client Service Representative (CSR). She posed perfectly in the chair, ready to greet the next patient with a smile and a tail wag! 💙

We love caring for pets like Nala…even when they sneak in a little “work” during their visit. 😉

Is your dog more tired than usual or gaining weight despite the same diet? It could be their thyroid.

Thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, are common in dogs and can lead to low energy, skin issues, weight gain, and more. The good news is thyroid issues are treatable.

Meet Cashew Chicken (a.k.a. Chick-Chick to our team), the beloved pup of one of our friends at Mt. Tabor Veterinary Care. 🐾

Cashew recently had her second TPLO surgery at MedVet Vancouver. A TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) helps stabilize the knee after a cranial cruciate ligament tear, the canine version of an ACL injury. It’s not uncommon for dogs who need surgery on one leg to later need it on the other.

Now home and cozy in blankets and pillows, Cashew is healing like a champ. 💙 When fellow veterinary professionals trust us with their own pets, it’s the greatest compliment we can receive.

Sweet Chloe gave her family quite a scare when she suddenly became very uncomfortable, lethargic, and nauseous at home. They rushed her to MedVet Hilliard's ER, where our team diagnosed her with acute pancreatitis, a condition that can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

With quick treatment and supportive care, Chloe is feeling so much better and has made a full recovery. We’re honored to have been part of her journey back to health!

MedVet is celebrating National Nonprofit Day by spotlighting a very special program near and dear to our caregivers: the AVMF REACH Program.

We understand unexpected pet emergencies and specialty veterinary care may be a financial burden for pet families — this program breaks down barriers to access veterinary care by offering grants to over 100,000 AVMA members nationwide. Through the AVMF REACH Program and on behalf of our clients, MedVet veterinarians proudly support charitable care when financial barriers could keep patients from getting the care they need.

If you're interested and able to support pet owners in financial need, please consider making a donation to AVMF's REACH Program by clicking the donation link on this post.
