SOCIALIZATION TIPS: Socialization is not limited to a dog saying hello to people and other dogs. Many dog owners rely on dog parks to “socialize” their dog. Dog parks are not the answer. In fact, they tend to create more issues (i.e. fear, anxiety, reactivity, aggression) among dogs and sometimes humans. Reality is even social dogs will fight back if provoked or left on their own to resolve a conflict. We’ve had clients over the years who had to take their dog to an ER after a dog park fight. We get the calls/texts later saying, “I wish I listened to your advice”. The DOG PARK RISK far outweighs the benefits!
Just like people, not all dogs are social and shouldn’t be forced into being something they aren’t. Socialization does not require a dog to be pet, touched, or even talked to.
Socialization is about your dog having good experiences with YOU. It’s about working with them near and around things but not always with those things.
Socialization isn’t just for puppies. It never stops and should be maintained throughout a dog’s life to help them grow in trust, confidence, and being well-balanced.
