A huge thank you to our Cuba Huddle House for hosting "Dine for a Cause" to benefit the animals at the Cuba Animal Shelter. It was wonderful to see familiar faces and meet new friends along the way. The staff went above and beyond to make sure the day was a success, and we are so grateful for their excitement and support.

Thanks to the generosity of all involved, nearly $400 was donated to help our furry friends. We deeply appreciate Huddle House for being such a loyal supporter of both our shelter and our community. A special thank you to our loyal animal lovers that shared the day with us.

These two sweet souls were found in the Industrial Park, heartbreakingly close to the shelter, likely dumped there. Their condition on intake was awful: itchy, mangy skin and bodies full of parasites. Despite it all, they’ve shown nothing but friendliness and trust. Both appear to be seniors.

They’re now getting the medical care they need and will both be spayed and neutered next week. We can’t wait to share their “after” photos as they heal and their true personalities shine through.

Donations to Partners for the Cuba Pound will go directly toward their medical care and recovery. If you have any information about where they came from, please let us know.

For now, we’re just so grateful to be able to give them the chance at the broken-to-beautiful story they so deserve.

Momma Mia and Her Miracle Pup

On July 29 Mia was found abandoned at an apartment building with her six newborn puppies just days old. Despite her own uncertain situation, Mia was doing everything she could to keep her tiny family safe, fed and protected. Once in our care, with nutritious food, vitamins and love from our staff, things looked hopeful at first. The puppies were nursing, and we believed this little family had a good chance.

Then, without warning, the heartbreak began. One by one, the puppies started to decline. Dr. Melanie’s expert opinion was that Mia carried a canine herpes virus. While it doesn’t affect the mother, it is often fatal to newborn puppies. The result was Fading Puppy Syndrome, and in a matter of days, we lost five of the six pups.

The devastation our staff felt is hard to put into words. These fragile lives were deeply loved, and their loss weighed heavy on all of us. But in the middle of the sadness, a little miracle remained.

Sam, a strong little boy, fought through the odds. Today, at six weeks old, he’s thriving, eating wet puppy food, dewormed, and already received his first puppy vaccination. If all continues well, he’ll be ready for adoption when he turns eight weeks old.

Mia, too, is doing wonderfully. She loves to run and play, can’t get enough of playing fetch and is a happy girl. Once spayed, this brave momma will be ready to find the forever home she so deserves.

Even though the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, we take comfort knowing that Mia and her puppies were not abandoned to suffer alone. They were cared for, cherished, and loved at the shelter. And now, Mia and Sam carry forward as reminders that even in heartbreak miracles can happen.
