There is a lot of confusion in terminology for populations of cats, so here is a helpful chart.

We hope you’re getting out to enjoy our recent wonderful spring weather! We’ve been seeing a lot of folks out on local trails with their dogs the last few days and the dogs sure seem to be having a good time! Take a look; you might just find your new best friend there! Please give us a call at (360) 678-8901 if you have any questions. Learn more at https://waifanimals.org/.

There have been several great adoptions at WAIF’s Oak Harbor cat adoption center recently and three new cats have been transferred in. We stopped by today to get caught up. We have a short video of Australian shepherd/Labradoodle mix Brandon. He's a friendly and playful but timid young pup who needs a family that will work with him to gain confidence. They may also need to make several visits so he can get acquainted with them before he goes to his new home. The video is less than half a minute long. Please give the shelter a call at (360) 678-8901 if you have questions about him.

We hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the nice sunshine today! We dropped in at WAIF’s Coupeville shelter to watch a few of the dogs out having fun in the play yard. There were a number of volunteers at the shelter spending time with both dogs and cats and we want to thank them for their dedication! Here are a few photos. Please give us a call at (360) 678-8901 if you have questions about any of the animals in our care. Learn more at https://waifanimals.org/.

Do you remember Tank? Last year, he was hit by a car and needed surgery to save his leg. The overall cost of surgery, rehab, and care was over $10,000. We reached out to the community for help and boy, did you all come through!

After months of rehab, foster care (provided by one of our dedicated employees!)and a year at the shelter, we can finally say he found his forever home! His new family lives off-island but they made a few trips to visit with Tank so they could get to know each other. His adopters will keep up with his rehab and we hope we get some updates too!

This is what it's all about. Your unwavering compassion and dedication to the animals in our community are truly unmatched. Our shelter animals—and all of us—are profoundly grateful for your support and kindness. Your commitment makes a world of difference in their lives!

All our dreams came true, including Eddie's, in finding his forever home today! We knew he wouldn't last long but finding the best family for him made it all worthwhile. We'll definitely miss him at the shelter. For such a small dog, he made a HUGE impression!

Congratulations to the new adopters!

Update: Eddie has been adopted!
Cute little Edward (“Eddie”) is only about 3 months old. His heritage is mostly Chihuahua with a little Pomeranian and a few other things mixed in (DNA results can be found at www.wisdompanel.com/app/s/3xkfdhj). He’s an active, friendly, playful, and just plain adorable little fellow. He currently weighs about 4 lb and has some growing to do but will probably never be very big. He arrived with an injury to one eye and is blind in that eye. The eye has completely healed otherwise and does not require any treatment. Eddie’s foster family sent a few photos taken during his stay with them, and it appears that they all had a lot of fun! Here’s what they told us about him:

Eddie is a very smart little guy and an absolute pleasure to foster. He has a lot of energy, so he will be best placed in an active household. He walks well on his harness. He knows several commands- sit, lie down, turn around, shake, and come when called. He loves to play with toys and has mastered a couple of puzzles for dogs. He sleeps in his crate and loves his playpen. If he gets overly excited, he will try and play bite. When he does this, we say "ouch" and put him in his crate for a time out. He loves to run and play in the yard. He will try and pick things up in the yard to eat and responds to "leave it" or "drop it". He loves to snuggle and take naps. He loves bully sticks. He loves his dog bed! He's affectionate but independent as well. Although he came in with an eye injury, it doesn't slow him down at all.

Some of the terms I would use to describe him are:
Affectionate
Energetic
Strong willed
Smart
Very trainable
Alpha dog- slightly competitive with other dogs
Needs a lot of interaction to keep him occupied

If you have any questions, please give the shelter a call at (360) 678-8901.

It was a beautiful spring day today and the dogs at WAIF’s Coupeville shelter were very happy to get out to the play yard and walking trails to enjoy it! The forecast is warning of possibly dangerous storms tomorrow (Wednesday) so make sure you are prepared to keep yourselves and your furry friends safe! We got photos of five new cats and four new kittens to introduce this afternoon and also a few of the other animals who are there awaiting new homes. Please give us a call at (360) 678-8901 if you have questions about WAIF or the animals in our care. Learn more at https://waifanimals.org/.

We want to direct a lot of attention toward Tank as it has been just about a year since he sustained very serious injuries when he was hit by a car. The community rallied around him and made sure he received the life and limb saving surgery and other treatments and follow-up care he needed. Tank has made a good recovery and is now able to run and play. Now about 2 years old, he’s a friendly and pretty nicely mannered pup with a lot of personality. He loves toys and he loves treats. We’d love to see this very special pup get settled into a loving forever home. Learn more about Tank at https://waifanimals.org/dog/tank/ or give WAIF’s Coupeville shelter a call at (360) 678-8901.

We paid a visit to WAIF’s Coupeville shelter this afternoon to get a few new pictures of some of the animals there. For some reason, the cats looked at us with great suspicion when we arrived with our cameras as you will see in their photos. We didn’t want to stress them so we headed out to the play yard to find Tank and he was a much better model! Enjoy the photos!
