Introducing the magnificent Moriesian, 8-year-old gelding, Giada’s Maximus Masterpiece. Maximus is triple registered with the Moriesian Horse Registry, Friesian Sporthorse Association, and American Buckskin Registry Association. He obtained Bronze Elite status with the FSA, is a Buckle Champion, and is a Register of Merit in color at the 45th All American Buckskin Congress. Maximus won the Grand Champion/Champion in the 52nd Central Michigan Horse Association all Breed Halter division. Maximus has showing awards in In-Hand/Sport In-Hand with the Moriesian Horse Registry along with many other first place halter winnings from other shows.
Maximus is now just a few weeks into dressage training. He will be ridden today by his trainer Steffi Moseby who runs a training and boarding business, called German Sporthorse, in South Rockwood Michigan. Steffi has a German Bereiter license and has been training dressage to FEI level and jumping for almost 20 years. The goal for Maximus is to train him up the levels in dressage and showing him First Level this year and adding driving skills in the future.
The Moriesian horse is a thoughtfully developed American breed that blends the nobility and presence of the Friesian with the versatility, athleticism and heart of the Morgan. Created with intention during the mid-20th century, the Moriesian was designed to be both beautiful and usable. A horse capable of excelling in sport while remaining a willing, dependable partner. Today, the breed is admired for its balance, symmetry, expressive movement and exceptional temperament.
Physically, the Moriesian reflects the best qualities of both parent breeds. With an expressive face, arched neck, compact yet powerful body and flowing mane and tail, the breed carries a regal appearance without excess heaviness. Averaging 15 to 16 hands, the Moriesian offers an ideal size for many riders. Movement is one of its defining traits, often showing Friesian-influenced suspension combined with Morgan agility and stamina. This combination makes the Moriesian naturally suited for disciplines that reward balance, rhythm and engagement. The preservation and promotion of this unique breed is the mission of the Moriesian Horse Registry (MHR), the official registry dedicated exclusively to the Moriesian horse. The Registry plays a vital role in maintaining breed standards, verifying pedigrees, and ensuring the integrity of breeding programs. Through accurate record-keeping, DNA requirements for breeding stock, and clearly defined eligibility criteria, MHR safeguards the future of the breed while supporting responsible breeders and owners.
Beyond registration, the Moriesian Horse Registry actively promotes recognition of the breed through education, community involvement, and performance programs. The Registry forges a strong network of enthusiasts who share a commitment to ethical breeding, good horsemanship, and the long-term success of the Moriesian. Membership provides access to resources, listings, and opportunities that elevate both individual horses and the breed as a whole.
In the show arena, Moriesians continue to demonstrate their versatility and competitive ability. While there are currently no breed specific classes, registered Moriesians successfully compete alongside other breeds in dressage, driving, combined driving, in-hand classes, and a wide range of open performance divisions. Their expressive movement, steady work ethic, and trainable minds allow them to stand out in disciplines that value both form and function.
The Moriesian Horse Registry supports show participation through its Year-End Performance Awards and Miles Awards programs, recognizing registered Moriesians who compete or actively participate in recreational riding and driving. These programs celebrate not only ribbons and scores, but also the partnership between horse and owner, reinforcing the breed’s reputation as both a capable athlete and a reliable companion.
Together, the Moriesian breed, the Moriesian Horse Registry, and the accomplishments of Moriesians in competition reflect a shared vision: A horse of beauty, balance, and heart, supported by a registry committed to integrity and growth. As awareness of the breed continues to expand, the Moriesian stands poised to earn even greater recognition, proving that elegance and versatility can, and do, go hand in hand.
