These heat advisories are no joke. Brevard County is seeing some intense heat, even early in the day and for a bit after the sun goes down, the humidity and heat take some time to really calm down.

Pet parents, please take care of yourself and your pups; avoid walking during these high heat hours, if possible. Enjoy some indoor enrichment games, puzzle feeders, or indoor training. Always make sure to have water available for your pups, and don’t forget to hydrate yourself, as well!

That summer heat is really kicking in, isn’t it? Why don’t you share with us some of your favorite indoor enrichment activities or your favorite pet friendly indoor areas to go train to beat the heat!

Some safety tips for you and your pup today.

-Make sure your dogs have up to date information on their collars- if their tags aren’t up to date tape information to the collar or the tags to have the most up to date information.

-Keep your dogs inside as much as possible- especially if you know they’re spooked of fireworks. (If your dog is fine with them, continue to be aware in case of a rogue firework or any dangerous situations)

-Leash your dog outside if you need to go outside in a non secure area- and if your dog is especially fearful, you may even consider leashing them in a fenced secure yard for additional safety.

- Give medication to calm your dog 30 minutes to an hour BEFORE the fireworks usually start in your area- this gives the meds time to start working before the stress really begins.

-If you’re having some type of Barbecue, or other event with many people going in and out of your home, consider crating or putting your dog in a room no one will access - especially once fireworks begin- to prevent accidental escapes.

While this is not a totally exhaustive list, these are just a few tips to keep yourself and your pups safe today.

Schwartzie got to enjoy a little stay-cation while his owner was on vacation. He was so happy to be able to stay in the comfort of his own home and keep his routine as normal as possible in this time.

Bringing back a post to talk about identification, as we’ve unfortunately seen so many lost pet posts.

There are a few options to choose from: tattooing, microchip, and the most common, dog ID tags!

So what should you have on your dog’s tag?

The most important thing is a way to contact you! The most common thing is a phone number. This ensures there is a way to get a hold of you if your dog is found.
Some people may also include their email or home address. But remember these tags have limited space- so make sure what you include counts!

Another thing to include on tags that many people don’t think of can be any special needs your dog may have- a simple phrase like “medication needed”, “deaf”, etc. can help lead to speedier contact, and may also deter theft of your dog.

You may also choose to include other information, maybe mentioning your dog is microchipped, etc, to let people know there are other forms of identification for your dog!

Many people choose to microchip their dog, on top of using ID tags. A Microchip can help reunite your pet, even if the tags are lost while your dog is loose! Consider talking to your vet- or even checking in with the local shelters near you- to see what options for microchipping may be out there for your pets, as well.

Another giant congratulations to this amazing team, Lobo and Nannette, for passing their third Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test! This time, they flew through the Canine Good Citizen Urban test, which focuses on city and urban life like loud traffic distractions and walking through dog-friendly businesses (like )

All three Canine Good Citizen tests that Lobo and Nannette have passed have demonstrated the bond between them and shown just how much it has grown.

The three levels of the Canine Good Citizen tests have 10 criteria per evaluation that get more challenging the farther along you get. This tests your dog’s ability to cope in various situations, from working in an arena to walking through a busy public park or dog-friendly business, and the confidence required to do so!
