To be or not to be in Foster Care??? Hamlet, Romeo and Macbeth have exited the Foster Care stage and are now ready to perform at The Cattery to find their furrever homes. Juliet and Othello needed to gain a bit more weight so they will leave foster care next week next week with Mama Tempest.

“The course of true love never did run smooth” but we are hoping these handsome boys will have an amazing life as they find their forever families. Macbeth is a leader and eager to explore and play. Romeo is stoic but loves to wrestle and pounce on his brothers. Hamlet is a gorgeous hunk who is a bit reserved until you find the purrfect spot to scratch on his belly!

So if you have been asking “Wherefor art thou Romeo (or Macbeth or Hamlet)” email [email protected] for an adoption appointment today! And be on the lookout for Tempest, Juliet and Othello to graduate next week!

Of course, immediately after we filled all available foster spaces, a kind pediatric neurologist reached out to one of our officers that she works with to let us know that she found a friendly mom and 4 kittens living under Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Because we know a busy hospital is a dangerous place for a mom and babies, our officer cleared out some extra space to take in this sweet family.

They were living under the building next to a walkway. And when we got there, we were surprised…there were actually 5 babies! It was easy to grab mom and the first few babies and place them in a carrier. The last few babies had to be tempted out to the sound of a mama cat calling kittens played on a phone. But luckily, we got them all!

Meet Louisa May Alcott and her Little Women, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, and her little man Laurie! These cuties are about 4 weeks old and absolutely adorable! They were covered with fleas and dirt, but after a good bath and some flea meds, they are soft, fluffy cuddle bugs! Mama is such a sweetheart! She seems so thankful to be safe inside!

We can’t wait for these Little Women to grow up into the special ladies (and gentleman) that we know they will be!

An all to common story in South Texas is unwanted kittens being thrown out with the garbage. If the kittens are lucky they escape the garbage bag or box and are able to find food and shelter, but many die of starvation and suffocation. Last week a Good Samaritan watched someone throw away a bag of kittens and immediately went to their rescue.

Meet the Garbage Pail Kids! Adam Bomb and Spacey Stacy are 2 adorable 6 week old kittens who are now safe in foster care! We have no space right now but squeezed them in. They are so lucky someone saw what happened.

These 2 kitties are sweet and social…they have definitely lived in a home with people. They loved scritches and attention and toys. They will be amazing pets after they complete quarantine and gain a few more ounces.

If you have unwanted kittens please reach out to rescues (although most are full as kitten season is in full swing!). If you absolutely must get rid of them, humane euthanasia at Animal Control is a much better option than starvation and/or suffocation in a dumpster. Even better there are multiple free and low cost spay neuter programs that can prevent unwanted pregnancies and births! Get any personal pets and community cats fixed ASAP so that no one is faced with trying to get rid of unwanted babies!

Meet Cinnamon and Sugar — two tiny sisters whose story started with heartbreak, but also hope.
Cinnamon, a beautiful little tortie girl, and Sugar, her sweet orange tabby sister, are only about two or three weeks old. Their momma was a neighborhood feral cat who chose a family’s garage as a safe place to have her babies.

Sadly momma started having seizures so they rushed her to the emergency vet, where she stayed overnight, though the outlook was uncertain. Fearing momma wouldn’t make it the family reached out and asked if we could take her kittens. There was a high possibility that momma got into something toxic, per the vet, so we knew the kittens might need more care than just bottle feeds.

Worried that the kittens might have ingested some of whatever momma
got into through her milk, they were observed closely overnight.
Sugar seemed to have some tummy issues and an involuntary leg twitch the first night but by the next day her symptoms had cleared. 💕

They are just too sweet so of course we needed to give them names to go with their personalities. We will keep you posted on their progress but for now it’s bottles and sleep for these two girlies. 🐾🐾

Let’s talk about FLEAS. Fleas are the most common issue that pet parents deal with during the summertime, and they are a huge nuisance! And with so many different flea control products, it’s hard to know what to do! Do indoor cats need flea control? How do you give flea control to an outdoor cat that won’t let you touch it?

Fleas are the most common external parasite for cats, and cats that are infected with fleas can become very uncomfortable. Fleas are responsible for a number of diseases in cats including dermatitis and the spread of tape worm. They are parasitic animals which means they need a host to survive. Fleas live off the blood of their host (the cat), and a severe flea infestation can have very scary consequences. Blood loss leads to anemia which can even lead to death if severe and untreated. Tape worms which are transmitted by fleas can also have adverse consequences.

Flea control is recommended for ALL cats—indoor and outdoor! That’s because fleas travel and when you go outdoors, you can bring them inside. Dawn dish soap works great for an initial flea bath. For cats that allow the application of flea control we only recommend veterinarian prescribed products. This is so important it’s worth repeating. ‼️YOU SHOULD ONLY USE VETERINARIAN PRESCRIBED FLEA CONTROL PRODUCTS‼️The over-the-counter stuff doesn’t work, and is very dangerous. It is not regulated and there have been many horror stories involving sick animals. If you can buy it without a prescription, DON’T USE IT. Our rescue uses and recommends topical Revolution or Advantage Multi. Both of these products protect against fleas and a variety of other parasites including heartworm.

Not sure if your cat has fleas? Use a comb and inspect their skin under the fur and search for flea dirt. Flea dirt looks like little specs of dirt and it’s a sign that your animal does in fact have fleas. It don’t fret, a little flea control will fix things! Have any questions about fleas? Ask away!

Rescue Part 2…

After we collected the 4 kittens from the first litter…We then moved to the other side of the porch to check out the second litter. The porch was full of junk that the homeowner piled up to provide safety for the feral cats and kittens from local dogs. We easily picked up mom and 2 babies, but baby number 3 crawled back under the large pile of stuff. We tried moving a few things to find the baby, but after finding a dead kitten that looked like it had been trapped under shifting debris, we decided we should stop moving stuff so we didn’t harm the last baby.

We took the first 4 kitten and mom and her 2 babies into foster care…starting their vaccines, flea treatment and parasite meds that night. We worried all night about the kitten left behind, so our officer went back the next day to see if she could find him. When she pulled up, she could hear him yelling from the street…begging to be rescued.

She lifted him off the porch and went to the other side…just to take a last look for the missing kitten from the first litter. And when she walked over, first one, then a second, head popped out of flowerpots on the porch!!!

She grabbed one of the kittens but the other one shimmied under the porch and out of reach. She had to call in help to bring traps to get the final baby. Luckily within an hour the final baby and the mom were in traps and safe in our care. The 3 additional babies were returned to their siblings, and the trapped mom was prepped to be TNR’d and returned to the house.

In total we took in 9 kittens and 1 mom in foster care, and an additional mom who we have fixed and returned! This area has a huge problem with unfixed cats…the homeowner says she feeds 15-20 cats every night. We will try to help her find resources to get more of the cats fixed so we don’t have to help further kittens in the area.

Meet our second litter the ! We are excited to see these veggies ripen!

Rescue Part 1

We had a busy weekend rescuing kitties!

We were contacted by a good Samaritan who was reaching out for help with 5 kittens at her mother in laws house. When we arrived, the kittens were not where they had previously been living. As we were looking around, we notice the mom with babies nursing on the porch next door. The babies looked 5-6 weeks old and were very malnourished…likely full of parasites…so we decided to take them into care. We collected 4 kittens amongst a plethora of plants and flowerpots…we couldn’t find the 5th kitten, and were worried that mom might have moved them because something happened to it. We decided this little family were a perfect little vegetable patch growing in a front yard garden.

As we were collecting babies the homeowner came out and was surprised to find these kittens on that side of her porch…because she knew a mom and babies were living on the other side of the porch!

To be continued!
