What's Really in the Bag

Pop quiz: What's actually inside that bag of "premium" dog food?

If you said chicken, rice, and vegetables... you're not wrong. But you're also not getting the full picture.

Here's the thing: pet food labels are designed to make you feel good about what you're buying. But the ingredients listed? They're not always what you think they are.

"Chicken" might mean chicken meal (rendered, processed by-products). "Natural flavors" could be... well, a lot of things. And those beautiful veggies on the front of the bag? Often present in amounts so small they're basically decorative.

I'm not saying this to scare you. I'm saying it because you deserve clarity–not marketing spin.

In Episode 3 of Dr. Pam Unleashed, I break down What's Really in the Bag: how ingredients are sourced, what the labels actually mean, and why "complete and balanced" doesn't always mean optimal.

It's an 8-minute reality check that'll change the way you read every pet food label from now on.

Ever read a pet food label and think "wait, WHAT is actually in this?" Comment below.

Meet Clover. 🤍

That slightly unimpressed side-eye? That's a dog who's been getting grumpier, moving slower, and nobody could figure out why.

His mom knew something was off. He was diagnosed with a heart murmur but there was no real follow-up. Just "watch it."

So I pulled his bloodwork and looked at the TRENDS.

What I found:

🚩 His heart murmur is much worse than realized - We need an echocardiogram - yesterday.
🚩 Massive adrenal stress (the smoke signal that most vets miss)
🚩 Fat metabolism issues
🚩 And here's the kicker: 11 years old with ZERO urinalysis ever done

You can't assess kidney function without urine. Early kidney disease shows up in urine, NOT blood.

Here's the truth: When the heart struggles, kidneys are never far behind. Once you lose that function, you don't get it back.

We're not waiting. We're acting NOW while we can still protect what he has.

"He's just getting older and grumpier" is NOT good enough.

Sometimes grumpy isn’t just attitude. Sometimes slow mornings aren’t just age. Sometimes it’s your body waving red flags that someone needs to actually READ.

Is your older pet "just slowing down"? Don't accept "it's just aging" as an answer. Aging isn’t disease - often it’s dysfunction we can still fix

Your dog's labs came back normal.

But your dog? Still not right.

You can see it. The low energy. The dull coat. The way they're just... off. And when you brought it up to your vet, you got the same line: "Everything looks normal."

So you smiled. Nodded. Left with your dog and that gnawing feeling in your gut that something's being missed.

You're not imagining it.

Standard lab panels aren't designed to catch dysfunction before it becomes disease. They flag the obvious stuff–what's already gone wrong.

But the markers that show how well your dog is actually functioning? The nutrients quietly running the show behind immunity, bone health, and gut integrity?

They're not even on the panel.

Vitamin D and Magnesium–two of the most critical players in your dog's body–don't get tested in routine workups. And when they're low, your dog doesn't crash dramatically. They just... fade.

Slowly. Subtly. In ways that look "normal enough" on paper.

But you know better. Because you're watching it happen.

That's why I created The Nutrient Deficiency Decoder–a simple guide that shows you the two most important nutrients standard labs are missing, why they matter, and what to ask your vet to test instead.

Because "normal" shouldn't mean "good enough." It should mean thriving.

Dr. Pam Unleashed - Episode 2: The Illusion of Independent Science

"But my vet recommended this food. It must be backed by science, right?"

I hear this all the time. And I totally get it–we want to trust that the research behind our pet's food is unbiased, thorough, and looking out for our dogs' best interests.

But what if I told you that much of the "independent" science on pet nutrition is funded by the very companies selling the food?

It's not a conspiracy. It's just how the system works. And once you see it, you can't unsee it.

The studies that make it into your vet's office? The guidelines that shape "premium" pet food formulas? They're not as neutral as you think.

And that matters. Because when profit drives the research, your dog's health becomes secondary.

Episode 2 of Dr. Pam Unleashed pulls back the curtain: The Illusion of Independent Science.

You'll walk away knowing exactly what questions to ask–and why the answers matter more than you realized.

(It's a quick 7-minute listen. Less time than scrolling Instagram.)

Have you ever wondered who's REALLY funding the pet food research? Drop a 👀 if this makes you curious.

Ear infections. Itchy skin. Gut issues.

You treat it. It clears up. Then two months later, it's back.

Sound familiar?

Here's what's really happening: symptoms don't repeat for no reason. They repeat because the root cause was never addressed.

Vitamin D regulates immune function at the gut level–where 70% of your dog's immune system lives. Magnesium activates Vitamin D so it can actually do its job.

Miss one or both, and your dog's defenses can't hold. The body keeps trying to fight the same battle, over and over.

You're not failing your dog. You're just treating symptoms the system taught you to treat–without ever looking deeper.

Standard labs won't show you what's missing. Nutrient testing will.

That's why I created The Nutrient Deficiency Decoder–a one-page guide that shows how these two nutrients work together, and why testing them is the first step toward breaking the cycle.

👉 Drop DECODER in the comments and I'll send it to you.

Because your dog deserves real healing, not just temporary relief.

Grain-Free or Fear Fueled

Remember when everyone panicked about grain-free dog food causing heart disease?
Your vet told you to switch. The FDA issued warnings. Pet parents scrambled to change brands–terrified they'd been poisoning their dogs.

But here's what most people don't know: that FDA report? It was deeply flawed. The science was shaky. And the fear it created benefited certain players in the pet food industry far more than it protected our dogs.

I know that sounds bold. But when you look at the actual data–and who funded the narrative–the story gets really interesting.

You deserve to know what really happened. Not the headlines. Not the hype. The truth.

That's exactly what I unpack in Episode 1 of Dr. Pam Unleashed: Grain-Free or Fear Fueled.

Ten minutes. One myth busted. And you'll never look at pet food marketing the same way again.

Did the grain-free scare make you switch your dog's food? Yes or no–drop it below.

Meet Daia. 💛

Look at that sweet face. When her mum and hooman sister brought her in and we discovered what we suspect might be cancer, I could see the fear in their eyes. That moment when the world seems to stop and you think you have to choose between aggressive treatment or… giving up.

But here’s what I told them:

The sign says YIELD, not GIVE UP. ⚠️

(Thanks for that wisdom, big brother 🙏)

In traditional medicine, we’d wait for every test, every confirmation, every answer before acting. But here’s the thing about functional medicine - we don’t wait for all the pieces to fall into place before we start fighting.

Daia started her protocol last week.

Yes, we’re being thorough - checking her lungs for metastasis, imaging her organs, running comprehensive bloodwork. We’re gathering all the information we need to tailor her treatment perfectly.

But we’re ALSO already moving. She’s on a targeted off-label protocol using Fenbendazole and Ivermectin - medications that have shown remarkable responses in both human and veterinary cases when we catch things early enough.

Our goal isn’t to reach for chemo and radiation right away (her parents aren’t interested in that route). Our focus is to:
✨ Stop the growth in its tracks
✨ Then work to make it smaller
✨ Support her body with additional tools like Chinese herbs +/- low-dose naltrexone as needed

I have many patients thriving on this protocol. When we get in early enough, we can slow progression and give these beautiful souls more quality time with their families.

This is what thinking differently looks like.

This is what happens when you don’t fold in on yourself at a scary diagnosis. You pause, you breathe, you pull yourself together - and then you move forward with intention.

Daia’s journey is just beginning, and we’re walking it with her every step of the way.

Has your pet received a diagnosis that made you feel like you had to choose between extremes? There might be another path. Let’s talk about it.💚

This is Joy. 💛
Her mom called me one day because she noticed something unusual:

➡️ Joy’s lip was catching on her bottom canine
➡️ Her ear looked a little droopy
➡️ Her eyelid drooped - and she couldn’t blink on that side

Instead, her third eyelid was sliding across the eye like a reptile. (Incredible – but also concerning.)

I told her mom: this could be facial nerve paralysis - you need to see a vet ASAP. My schedule was already full that week, so I sent her straight to a regular vet to be seen immediately.

They ran bloodwork, cleaned her ear, and told her to recheck in a few weeks. But her mom knew that wasn’t enough, so she brought Joy back to me.

Here’s where the shift happened:
✨ Her thyroid dose was off - which can absolutely affect nerves. We adjusted.
✨ We rechecked her ears.
✨ When she developed weakness in her front leg, I suspected neurologic involvement and recommended a consult.

The neurologist couldn’t see her for 6 weeks. So in the meantime, we built a neurological protocol.

When the first approach didn’t bring results, I told her mom what I tell every client:

👉 If what we’re doing isn’t working, we’re not over the target. We need to adjust.
So we adjusted - for a possible autoimmune neuritis (inflammation of the nerve). And slowly, Joy began to improve.

Her thyroid is stable, she’s lost extra weight, she’s playful again, and she’s about 70% recovered. The only things left are a little droop in her ear and a partial blink.
This is the power of looking beyond the surface.

It’s about listening - to the pet, to the parent, and to what the body is telling us - and being willing to redirect when the first path isn’t the right one.
Joy is proof: progress doesn’t always come from one test or one treatment. It comes from persistence, adjustment, and partnership.

🐾 Pet parents - have you ever had a moment where you just knew something was “off” with your dog or cat, even when the tests looked fine?

Share your story in the comments - or drop a pic of your pet so we can celebrate their resilience together.

What’s the goal of senior pet food? According to processed pet food companies, it’s to promote digestibility and nutrient absorption. Sounds good, right?

Here’s the problem:
Their solution is to decrease protein, increase fiber, and replace calories with starchy carbs like:
🔹 Grains
🔹 Beans
🔹 Sweet potatoes

Sounds harmless, but think about this:

Your senior dog is p**ping more because fiber pushes food through the gut faster.
But is your senior pet actually absorbing nutrients from a food dominated by starchy carbohydrates - when their anatomy and physiology aren’t built to digest those?
🐾 Here’s the biology:
Remember that dogs (and cats) don’t have the enzyme alpha-amylase in their saliva to break down starchy carbs. Even if you feed a grain-free diet, those sweet potatoes or beans are still starchy carbs - and your pet’s digestive system simply isn’t equipped to process them.

So while you see lots of p**p, the real question is:
Is your senior pet getting the nutrients they need?

What can you do?
Choose species-appropriate, nutrient-dense foods that align with your pet’s natural biology - because nutrition should fuel health, not just fill bellies.

What’s your experience with senior pet diets? Let’s discuss below! ⬇️

✨ Pet Personality Spotlight: Throne Zone ✨
Meet Casey, one of our newest Cavaliers. 💕

If you know Cavaliers, you know they all seem to have a royal streak – and Casey has claimed her spot on what we call the Cavalier Throne 👑 (aka the top of the pillow or this chair that all our Cavies adore).

Like many Cavaliers, she came to us with a few things stacked against her:
✨ Dry eyes
✨ Extra pounds
✨ Chiari malformation (very common in the breed)
✨ Possible syringomyelia signs - scratching around her neck and ears, head adjusting in sleep, and snoring

And yet - like every Cavalier I’ve ever met - she’s pure sweetness. Truly, I’ve never met a Cavalier I didn’t love.

Here’s the exciting part: Casey’s mom is learning about the power of whole food nutrition.
For years, Casey has struggled with loose stool and weight gain. By changing her to a real-food diet, we’re finally stepping off the “whack-a-mole” wheel of chasing symptoms and actually leveling the playing field.

Will this fix everything? Not quite. Her dry eye will likely still need support. But her thyroid, weight, and coat can all improve dramatically with proper nourishment. You can already see the clues in her coat and pigment - signs her thyroid may be depleted.

That’s what I love about cases like Casey’s: when food changes the body, you can see it with your own eyes. No one has to “take my word for it.” Pet parents become believers when their dog transforms in front of them.

Give us two months - and I think you’ll be looking at a completely different dog.

🐾 Cavalier parents - does your pup also claim a “royal throne” in your house? Drop a pic of your little king or queen in the comments so we can admire their reign. 👑

The Evolution

After almost a decade of traditional practice, Dr. Pam Montgomery-Fittz established Vitality Pet Care, LLC to bring new options of treatment for our four-legged, furry friends to pet owners in the DFW Metroplex. What started out as mobile acupuncture practice in 2001 grew into a multiple modality veterinary office utilizing: Whole Food Nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Food Therapy, animal chiropractic, western herbs, functional medicine, and homeopathy on selected cases. In addition, Dr. Pam also offers Functional Blood Work Analysis to help identify existing imbalances and correct issues before disease starts.

Vitality Pet Care (VPC) partners with clients’ regular veterinarians to bring about the best possible care for pets. While VPC offers only holistic modalities, it is the integration of the two treatment philosophies that provides a comprehensive approach to maintaining the health and well being of our fur babies. VPC’s focus is creating a solid foundation with whole food nutrition and building a strong framework of health using other modalities that are appropriate to the case. In pets with disease, the treatment plan often wraps around that of the veterinary specialist or regular veterinarian and works to strengthen the pets, allowing the pet to wean off of pharmaceuticals wherever possible. The focus is always improving that pet’s energy and quality of life. In addition, young puppies and kittens are started on a Path of Wellness at an early age to maximize health, while minimizing the development of disease.

In August 2019, Dr. Pam closed her practice to pursue the development of online courses for pet owners and veterinarians. Dr. Pam’s new venture, Dr. Pam Holistic Vet, promises to bring more awareness and knowledge to more people to help our furry little friends live a rich and vital life!
