🐣 Coccidiosis prevention has been a BIG focus here lately at Saltillo Ridge Silkies.

With all the rain, humidity, and temperature swings we’ve had in Central Arkansas this year, moisture management has become half the battle. The greenhouse bas been amazing for chicks… but they can also turn into tiny tropical ecosystems if you’re not careful.

A few things we do here to help prevent cocci:

• Endocox for all new hatches
• Each hatch gets its own separate brooder for the first 1-2 weeks
• Puppy pads changed DAILY for new chicks
• Fresh clean water every day
• Waterers cleaned regularly
• Bedding stirred daily in older chick barns to prevent moisture buildup
• Full bedding changes as needed, especially if damp underneath (at least weekly)
• Fan circulation in the greenhouse to keep air moving
• Avoid overcrowding - this is a BIG ONE
• Watch closely for lethargy, droopy wings, reduced appetite, or “flat” chicks

Biggest lesson this year: bedding can look dry on top and still be swampy underneath. 😭

Preventing cocci is a lot easier than treating a sick chick later.

Sweet little babies are worn out from a long day of hatching. I’ve never had 12 out of 12 hatching eggs make it to lockdown before. Thank you so much 6 Hands Homestead for sharing your eggs with us!
