This has been a particularly bad year for fleas. Now that we’ve had our first frost and flurries, let’s hope we’re done with that nonsense. Poor Gizmo was carrying plenty of these pesky pests. Treat not only the dog to a fleas bath, but also his bedding and wherever he sits or sleeps. Then do it again in another week to break the lifecycle. Likewise, treat any others pets yours may have been in contact with.
Fleas can be so voracious that they can make your pet anemic. Check the gums. If they are gray or white instead of pink, feed the animal foods rich in iron. I’m Vegan, but doubt you could temp your dog with dark leafy greens of tofu. Organ meat such as liver would be more palatable for them. Be sure to cook all meats well.

This dog’s owners were unsure as to why their Shih Tzu mix was scratching so vigorously at his ears. Lift the leather and it becomes apparent. This little guy produced a lot of wax, probably in response to an ear infection exacerbated by excess ear hair. Dogs with pendulous ears need to have them checked out regularly and I recommend plucking them with ear powder if hair growth is profuse. If wax is left long enough, as in this case, it can dry and harden causing a plug of it to block air flow (and hearing).
Regular grooming is important for many reasons, and this is one of them.🐶

This is what ‘flea dirt’ or actually flea f***s (that are indicative of the presence of these gross little bloodsuckers) looks like. This peppery stuff is most obvious at the animal’s croup (junction between hind and tail). The way you can definitively identify this stuff from just sand or dark dandruff is to put a few specs onto a damp white paper towel. If they melt into red spots, they are the remnants of flea p**p.
Ask your veterinary professional how best to rid yourself of these micro-monsters.
