Our South Side Family Urban Farms network uses sustainable growing practices to increase fresh fruit and vegetable access and overcome fresh food insecurities.
We are dedicated to teaching dietary and agricultural info to build sustainable food systems. Our farm goal is to provide Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)Boxes at a rate comparable to income levels of residents. We will accept SNAP benefits for seniors and those on fixed and supplemented incomes. 2022 will bring a farm stand in a community where fresh vegetables and fruits can be sourced.

🧀 2 cups Monterey jack cheese (shredded)
🍖 16 ounces ground beef
🧅 1/2 medium onion (sliced)
🌶️ 1 bell pepper (sliced)
🥫 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Join Us for Kendall Rae’s Earth Day Learning Fair on April 26th! 🌎🎉
Calling all YOUTH! We’re celebrating Earth Day in a big way and want YOU to join us!
Join us as we raise awareness for sustainability, agriculture, and protecting our planet. Whether you’re a scout troop, a school club, or just interested in agriculture, we’d love for you to be part of this amazing event!
We’ve been fairly quiet all winter on social media. We’ve been diving deep into our 2025 Market Garden season and have a few thousand plants headed your way already!
This season we were anticipating and hopeful to continue working with the Ohio CAN program through which we have sold produce wholesale to the Ohio Foodbank Association that went to a number of Food Pantries in our region. Unfortunately on March 7th the federal funding for this program was cut; forcing in quick order our small and still new farm to find new income streams for the season which is already underway.
We have decided to begin selling our produce, herbs, and cottage goods at the 2nd Street Market Farmers Market in Dayton starting every Saturday in May! We anticipate selling on both Saturday and Sunday at 2nd Street Market in June as peak summer produce kicks into gear and several new crops we’ve added for this farmers market come into production!
Urbana (Champaign County Farmers Market) friends, we are working on several local retail options and will be sharing those details once finalized!
Stay tuned to our Stories and Posts on Facebook and Instagram to learn what produce we have growing for you and for our retail options in Urbana, Dayton, and Columbus!

Meet Minister Aaron K Hopkins
Meet Aaron: I am Minister Aaron K Hopkins ( He/Him ), a Servant of God and Community. I am the Farm Visionary and Executive Director of South Side Family Farms and its farm enterprises.
Aaron’s South Side Roots: I've lived in this immediate community for 31 years at my current location, yards from the farm. Before that, I lived two miles from our current address for 13 years. I also attend church and serve within walking distance of home. I am the current servant President of the South Side Community Action Network Civic Association and am the Religious Social Services Commissioner for the Columbus South Side Area Commission.
Aaron’s History in Landscaping & Gardening: As an 11-year-old growing up a mile away from where I currently live, I had a paper route that allowed me to connect with residents where I would ask to cut their grass and trim their bushes. I also planted flowers with my mom at our home. At the age of twenty, I started a series of jobs at local landscape nurseries for the next 12 years of my life.
Why Aaron started South Side Family Farms: Under the direction of my church Pastor, to balance the axis of the cross of Church and Community Commitment, I joined the community civic association, South Side Community Action Network (SSCAN). The purpose of SSCAN is to connect residents with solutions. From this, grew the Growing Community and Family Concerns Farm Market. Our goal is to provide a safe, protected garden environment that connects neighborhood seniors and their wisdom with the strength of youth who have become disconnected from our community. It is a place where we begin to reconnect as a neighborhood family. Seniors give guidance and share their experiences on how they have grown backyard gardens to feed their families. They also show young women who are single parents how to cook healthy meals quickly and easily.
Aaron’s Wishes for South Side Farm Participants: First and foremost, we want to give participants access to fresh fruits and vegetables right in their neighborhood. We educate them on the health benefits of these foods and how to grow them at home. We also educate them on ecology and the necessity of vibrant colors and green spaces in their community. Hopefully, our efforts will inspire some youth into lanes of agriculture and agri-sciences and also bring new economic opportunity to a low-income population.
Aaron’s Favorite Vegetable (and way to prepare it): My favorite vegetables are yellow summer squash and rutabaga. I saute the yellow squash with fresh butter and onions. Rutabaga preparation is similar, but I use jowl bacon renderings and caramelized onions and then steam it.
Along with food justice and food sovereignty, we look to correct the many systemic social determinants of poverty that affect communities of color. As an African American husband, father and grandfather, I want to lead by my example to strengthen the community and Its views of cultural diversity with respect to one another and level the playing field of transference of wealth. Our motto is "Plant Seeds of Change and Plants for Progress."
