Little Willow here was pretty fearful and would shut down and refuse to move when confronted with the outside world. Balanced training, along with being around other dogs, helped her open up and become more confident! She now walks on a leash no problem and gets to enjoy off-leash freedom. :] There is a misconception that balanced = harsh and that e-collars are some kind of "last resort" or only for stubborn, high-drive dogs. The truth is that all dogs benefit from balance and that tools like the e-collar, when used intelligently, can build a dog up rather than break them down.

He may be cute and fluffy, but Kenny's first instinct with dogs is to dominate, particularly if the other dog is male or has strong energy. He also looks to claim resources from other dogs. He will start a fight if the human isn't 100% in control of the situation. However, learning how to be with other dogs is usually beneficial. In this case, he actually enjoys it, but he needed to learn to control some really unhealthy impulses.

The point here, as usual, is not to claim that he was the hardest dog ever to train, but rather to point out that it couldn't be done without a balanced approach. One or two corrections for pulling on the leash and he never reacted with me. He simply never did it despite his owner saying that she struggled with his reactivity for years. Integrating with other dogs was more challenging, but we got there by interrupting bad thoughts, correcting bad behaviours when they did happen, and reinforcing good choices.

I didn't show any corrections. If you're one of the people who need a comfortable lie (i.e. the people hating on me for my last video), just tell yourself I only used treats. The actual training process is not especially exciting or pretty. It's usually repetitive and messy (meaning the animal is learning, making mistakes, etc.; it doesn't look like an amazing finished product). People only like seeing a before/after and not what happens in between.

P.S. We still have much progress to make, but he's doing much better, as indicated by the fact that he couldn't even be walked before and I'm now biking with him.

I don't think I ever posted a photo of Scout, who used to keep her owners up all night with barking. She's a great example of an inherently anxious dog who needs constant direction and leadership to alleviate anxiety and help her remain calm. In addition to obedience training and exercise to help her achieve a better mental state, the barking was corrected with the e-collar. No sleep deprivation war crimes allowed. :P

Edit: My point in posting was not to say that I'm the best trainer on Earth, it was just to say that I am willing to help this dog while so many of the people who claim to be able to help ANY dog without aversives would not. I am able to get him out and exercising instead of cooped up pacing in the house/yard. He is more manageable and much easier to walk because he has some impulse control now. I also am not charging the owners crazy prices or making them spend thousands on a board and train just to get their dog walked. He was returned to the rescue four times, and they have had at least ten Dobermans between them before adopting him. I will help him, even if I can't do it the most optimal and perfect way. Starting with a dog on their home turf where they have already built up a lot of bad associations/habits is not easy, but I work with what I have.

A neighbour came out while we were training, so he recorded a clip for me. This is an example of a dog the "force-free" ideologues won't even pretend to be able to help (unless it's on the internet). They would just drug him and leave him in the house/yard forever. P.S. This dog is a rescue. His owners did not have him from a puppy to give him proper socialisation and training from a young age.

Someone on TikTok said that hating people who don't want to use aversive tools is my whole personality. The truth is I have very little time for social media, so I'm going to spend the time I do have exposing the harm and deceit behind "positive-only" and "force-free". It is not a training style. It is a delusion. If an individual chooses not to use certain tools because they feel they don't need to with their dog(s), that's fine. What's not fine is the false narrative currently being popularised by many so-called trainers and the supposedly legitimate veterinary/training entities which claim that it is possible to train all dogs without force/aversion and that to ever employ force or aversion is unnecessary cruelty. Fighting back against this madness is the main reason I post.

This was the day Chara (grey husky) discovered her love for Cooper (brown dog on the left). It's a love that mainly originates from how fun he is to chase. :P

Did you know that there is a French Brittany as well as an American Brittany? The AKC doesn't differentiate, but they are clearly different breeds with their own physical traits, behavioural characteristics, and hunting styles.

The medals, made with recycled bike chain, detach from their ribbons and become keychains. I also have an option at sign-up where you can pay extra to put whatever text you want on the back of your tag(s).

I am being sarcastic with the thumbnail text, of course. Communicating boundaries in a way dogs can actually understand promotes safety and reliability, which allows dogs to do more and have more freedom. There are a lot of people out there right now who refuse to accept this, but their dogs don't generally live much of a life.

As you can see, I am correcting her, and she is learning. She is learning why doing certain things are a very bad idea without me actually running her over or us crashing. I am using the minimum amount of force to adequately communicate with her and no more. The better she does, the faster we can go--and that's what she wants! In this case, the forward momentum and speed are the reinforcers. Even though I use a LOT of treats during training, they are not necessarily the best reinforcer for every situation or dog.
