Still here! Still training!

Many apologies for not keeping up with social media. Some people just want to "look good." Me? I just want to "do good" and help as many people with their furry companions as I can.

Bodie Update

Aggression can come in different forms. It is very important to identify the root cause. Fear, plus a breed with natural tendency to nip or bite can have some bad consequences. Bodie is young and put on a pretty scary show for members of the extended family. There isn't a lot of history on this rescue, so we don't know why he is like he is but it was clear he was afraid.

Bodie's mom has done such a fantastic job teaching him all the basics, establishing good safety protocols and has begun counter conditioning him to all his triggers. She knows it's going to be a long process but we admire her dedication and commitment in helping to rehabilitate him!

When I met Bodie, I couldn't have gotten close enough to take this picture. While he reacted a little to me coming through the door today mom was able to practice counter conditioning while I visited. By the end of the training session he was comfortable enough to lay on the ground and give his belly for pets. This didn't happen over night! His mom has been working hard with him since we started and it shows.

Good Job Bodie! So proud of your progress!

A lot of owners have a hard time trimming nails. Chepe doesn't seem to mind it too much. He has a whole village of trainers, dog people and his owner that have made sure he is a good doggo!

Some useful tips on making nail trimming stress free!

🐾 Grab your pup's favorite treat
🐾 Introduce all of your equipment slowly. Present them, let your pup sniff and then tell him what a good dog he is.
🐾 If you use a dremel, turn it on and off, rewarding your pup for curiosity or not moving away.
🐾 big dog? Train them to lay on their side and slowly increase duration while playing with his paws.
🐾 touch the equipment to your dog and reward
🐾 clip a small part of the nail first and reward!

Go Slow! Keep Rewarding! Practice Often!

Soon you will have no trouble at all clipping your pup's nails!

Dogs do not come preprogrammed knowing human words. They predominantly communicate through body language, energy, and touch.

One of the first challenges we often give clients is to just stop TALKING to the dog for a week. Use the leash, energy, body language and even luring to get the dog to move and engage with you.

The only word your dog learns that first few days is YES!

Give yes meaning by following it immediately with something the dog wants and is motivated by. Food, physical affection, or a toy/play.

Remember that if you are conversating with your dog or repeating commands over and over again without the dog following through, likely all the dog is hearing is the equivalent of Charlie Brown's teacher to us.

🌟 Ready for ADOPTION🌟

Willow had her last day of training!

This little girl loves to SNUGGLE! She spent the last several days learning her name, sit, down, come, leave it, free, spin (to her left side), give her paw, door manners and has started on duration for implied stay on down and sit! Whoever adopts her will have a free lesson with us to help in the transition. With a little time and consistency, there will be very little that this smart girl can't do.

Willow also has a nice prey and hunt drive. She would make someone a great beginner level AKC scent or barn hunt companion. We recommend low impact sports, though she has no trouble getting around, she does have some congenital conformation issues. Don't let her fool you, she is fast! ❤️

We have to give a pretty big shout out to 4 amazing people who volunteered to come out and hide during our mini sar training Sunday. Snow squalls and nearly 40 mph wind gusts. Ohio always likes to make training an adventure in March.

Thank you so much, Amy, Heather, Lindsey, and Maggie! It's one thing for working dog handlers to brave any weather condition but something entirely different for someone to volunteer their time and risk possible frost bite to sit and wait to be found. The world needs more people like you. ❤️🐺
