At the end of July, I sat in a presentation on Dall Sheep populations in Alaska hosted by and . It was quite insightful into the rough times sheep and sheep hunters will have for some time. They do fantastic research, but I am happy to see that there are still a few adult rams in the general season units like this one.

Have you ever had a grizzly bear munch on your caribou after you shot it?

This group did. Fortunately only 2 of the 5 had any real damage. The bear was scared off of the pile and no one was harmed. It makes for a really cool story.

It's getting late to keep the velvet. This bull was just a little too far gone. I was able to get the skull cleaned and back to the owner quite quickly.

Are you dreaming of September? In July most moose still have velvet and it sheds throughout August. It won't look like this for some time yet.

Any clue what small game animal this is? The beetles are right through this dude fast. There is no closed season for these in Alaska.

Many animals are smaller in southern regions and get larger at northern latitudes. Black bears do not follow that trend. Alaska black bears are not small, but the largest black bear was hunted in New Brunswick. Many large black bears can be found throughout southern US.

This is a plains bison from the copper River basin. Did you know that is reintroducing Wood Bison?

It is awesome to see an increase in large mammal diversity.

Have any success yet this spring or summer? This hunter sure did.
I personally have not seen one bear on my walks with a rifle.

Have you ever heard of a cactus buck? This guy is not but the antler size would be similar. They never lose their velvet and have stunted antler growth. The exact cause needs more research but it is linked to issues with the te**is.

Black-tailed deer are awesome. They live in some of the coolest places on earth, and have some unique habitat requirements. One way that may help is timber management.
