You should totally follow along on our new rescue girl! She’s got a long road ahead…😿

We brought in a new girl yesterday, and she’s… well, she's a lot more fragile than we initially expected.

Over the weekend, a friend posted asking if anyone could help an abandoned cat on their property before the freeze hit. One of our hero rescue friends went out to get her, and despite everything she's been through, this little calico was friendly and social right from the start. She stayed at MeowLuxe for three days, getting small meals, warmth, and a little bit of cleanup while she waited for a vet appointment.

I picked her up yesterday. I initially thought she would be just a scruffy stray who’d need the basics and would be a quick adoption at Bertha’s Beans. Instead, she was in extremely poor condition (and that's an understatement). The vet team was worried about her prognosis, but they also saw what we saw: a cat who is unbelievably sweet and clearly trying her hardest.

She spent the last 24 hours in the hospital on IV fluids, antibiotics, steroids, and some very gentle grooming to get the worst mats and debris off her. She’s now home with us so we can monitor her closely through the next few days, which are going to be critical. She’s severely malnourished and at risk for refeeding syndrome, so her meals have to stay very small and very controlled.

Even with all of that stacked against her, she has been nothing but loving — tiny meows, gentle head butts, and little purrs every time she gets pets. Every bone in her body is visible, but she still tries to curl up in a lap like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

She’s a long-haired calico with the brightest green eyes, and we’re going to do everything we can to give her a real chance.

For now, we’ve been calling her Lemon, because this whole situation is a big lemon…and we’re hoping with the right care, love, and a lot of cheering on, she gets her lemonade moment.

We’ll share small updates each day as she fights her way back. She needs all of us rooting for her.

Hey everyone - we know many of our friends and neighbors are affected by the ongoing government shutdown. We know things are rough right now, and we never want anyone in our community to have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets.

If things are tight right now, please come visit us. We’ll make sure your pet has food each week while the shutdown is affecting paychecks and benefits.

And because community works best when we take care of each other, we’re also starting a Neighbors Helping Neighbors Pet Food Fund.
