🐶💙 Understanding Brachycephalic Syndrome 💙🐶
Flat-faced dog breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, and Boston Terriers may look irresistibly cute—but those squishy faces can come with serious health challenges known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).
✨ What is BOAS?
BOAS is a collection of anatomical abnormalities that cause partial obstruction of the upper airways, making it harder for these pets to breathe.
✨ Key anatomical issues may include:
✅ Stenotic nares (narrow nostrils) – limiting airflow
✅ Elongated soft palate – blocking the airway
✅ Hypoplastic trachea – smaller windpipe diameter
✅ Everted laryngeal saccules – further obstruction when inflamed
🐾 Signs your pet may struggle with BOAS:
🔹 Loud, chronic snoring or snorting
🔹 Labored breathing, especially in heat or during exercise
🔹 Gagging or retching
🔹 Cyanosis (bluish gums) in severe cases
🔹 Collapse during excitement or exertion
🌡️ Hot weather, stress, and obesity can worsen symptoms, so it’s critical to manage their weight, avoid overheating, and keep activity gentle.
🩺 Treatment & prevention:
Some pets may benefit from surgical correction of stenotic nares or elongated soft palate, which can dramatically improve quality of life. Early assessment by your veterinarian is key.
❤️ These breeds bring so much joy—but they need extra care and understanding to stay healthy and breathe easier.
