Training with a dog that needs a special diet doesn't have to be difficult. Use these tricks to easily make your dog's hydrolyzed food options more rewarding!
Often, owners of dogs with allergies can have trouble because their food reward options are limited. This can especially be true if your dog is on a hydrolyzed diet. But, there are ways to Make your dogs food more exciting, even for dogs on these diets!

Here we're working on Take A Breath with Waffles. While working on this it helps to have a light behind you and to video so you can review it later!
Just like people, taking a deep breath can help dogs calm themselves down.
(And note that Waffles is on a diet with his vet, we're using his prescription food as our treats so he can keep getting healthier! )
Also note that if your dog has anxiety, you need to talk to your vet or a veterinary behaviorist. Taking a breath is not a cure for anxiety!

Here we’re using our watch cue to look at triggers (people in this case) outside the window. This is a hard one because a lot of dogs have a history built up of barking out the window so it’s more likely they’ll do it again right when they spot something! That’s why we recommend limiting access to the window for a bit then doing calming activities and rewarding looking calmly out & heavily rewarding coming away from the window BEFORE you work on this in that scenario. This teaches Mork that he can watch what’s going on outside, but he can also come away (so he doesn’t get ‘stuck’ fixating until he barks)!

Here we're using a Watch cue to watch deer about ten feet behind the fence! We actually use this cue with a bunch of things like squirrels, deer, people, dogs, and more! It's a great way to teach your pup how to evaluate the environment without barking or lunging at exciting things! Start by using a moving toy or person (if your dog isn't reactive). Then reward with a toy from you or a tossed treat to keep the excitement up. Remember, especially at the start were competing with a LOT of excitement!

Here Mork is working on finding the toy whose scent is on my hand (theoretically! Sometimes dogs make wholly different connections than we expect!). He has a sniff cue which means smell what I bring in front of you, a find it cue which means find something (usually given with info like find *name of toy*, find it directly after tossing a treat, here it was find it after he sniffed my hand). We hadn’t done this in a bit so he needed a bit of encouragement and connection mid way through with the em chin rest, but he figured it out!
Also this was mid living room clean, so all his toys were on the ground!

When I say start slow with cooperative care, this is what I mean. Do a few short sessions where your dog is rewarded around the new object, with neither you nor them interacting with the object.
Also use this time to work on your dogs positioning and watch their body language so you can adjust later sessions if you see discomfort or stress.
If we do too much at once, our dogs won't have a solid understanding of the basics when we progress to harder steps.
Here, Mork and I are working on our first step toward getting a cytology sample around his nail bed using a q-tip. We've been doing this and progressing for about a week and I'll post more updates videos too, but I figured I'd show where we were at during our first session.
Remember, were running a sale with 15% off with the discount code CERT15 so if you want to make vet or grooming appointments better, help your dogs not bark at neighbors or other dogs, or work on manners, etc, were here!
My feeds all Oona's Adventure Day appointments lately! But we got lots of good videos because we're working on a lot (and she's so cute, who could complain)!
Is your dog nervous of getting into the car? Do they refuse and plop down? Do they growl? Do they shut down? We can help!
Here we're playing a game to help her feelings about approaching and getting in the car. She gets nervous and doesn't want to go in it at times.
We're playing a really fun game where we race to the car together for some rewards in or near the back seat. For this, I'm not pushing her to get in the car, were just having fun moving towards it and she's getting a 🎉 party 🎉 of treats in the back seat!
When your dog is afraid or nervous of the car, you won't start here! You'll start further away and with smaller steps. These can be as simple as getting a Kong in your garage or a treat scatter next to your front door after you grab your keys or in your driveway. And guess what? ‼️ After doing that once or twice, go inside and give your dog a break rather than pushing for more (this is where people often get into trouble)! ‼️
You have to help your dog feel better about the car and areas around it before they can be comfortable interacting or approaching it.
⚠️ Often, if our dogs are nervous of getting in the car, especially if they've been tricked into it, the area surrounding the car and even our process of grabbing our keys then leashing them up is poisoned, meaning these actions and areas are a cue that predict something they don't like. ⚠️
The first step to helping them be comfortable going in the car is helping our dogs feel better about all those little pieces along the way. Then we can work on games to help them be excited to approach or get into the car itself!
If your dog gets nervous of the car or the shower, we can help! Check out https://FortunateFido.com or email [email protected] to see our Services and Packages and get on your way to hel
This is a video from my homeschooling session with Archie (he has a puppy brother and a sister I work with as well when I'm there!). Here we're working on offered attention and then playing our 1, 2, 3 game up and down the driveway.
Archie has a habit of pulling during walks and he also gets nervous easily and barks when he does! Here, were focusing on building up attention and nice walking before we get to the street. Pulling is a good indicator of our dog's mental state. If they're pulling and unable to focus on anything else but the next smell, sight, etc, they're going to be too over the top when they encounter distractions! So, we want to work at an easier level that they can handle and slowly stretch it out from there in order to set them up for success. We're especially careful about it here as we're working in Lakewood so everything's close together and busy!
When working with us, we might encourage you to shorten your neighborhood walks and go over the same path multiple times rather than doing a huge looping path because it can help set your dog up for success! That way, the path is more familiar each time we go over it, meaning it's easier for our dogs to stick with us! For easily over aroused dogs (not Archie specifically!), this also helps break the cycle of them constantly being inundated with new sights, new smells, and new stimuli every second of their walks, which can make it so they're finally able to think during their neighborhood walks rather than frantically trying to get to the next new thing.

Muzzles are great tools that help many dogs stay safe and there's so many benefits to getting your dog used to one, even if they're not aggressive!
Getting your dog's muzzle training started doesn't have to be hard! You can fold it in to your daily life during their breakfast or dinner! Here, Stitch shows an easy way to start getting your dog used to a muzzle using their food bowl.
Remember, we want our dogs to be comfortable and happy with their muzzle, we don't want them frustrated, worried, or scared of it. This means that we take the introduction slow and spend time building the muzzle up as something rewarding.
If you need help with cooperative care and/or helping your dog get used to a muzzle, we can help!

Sick day games! Mork learned he can bring me tissues instead of just trying to steal them! It's definitely not perfect, which is to be expected since he literally just learned it and went through those steps twenty minutes ago! ❤️
I'll try to post the video of me shaping it up at some point this weekend.

Cooperative care is important, but what do you do while you build up your dogs comfort with the clippers or dremel?
Teach them to dig on a scratch board to file their own nails!
