Titan was surrendered to the Memphis shelter as a puppy, along with his whole litter. It’s a hard place for any dog and a dangerous one for a puppy. Look at him now. 💙💙💙

Fern was never on Petfinder. Never on our social media. We weren’t even sure she’d be adoptable.

She’d spent her whole life outside, neglected, and meeting new people indoors made her shut down. Her foster dad in Memphis spent four or five months slowly changing that — walks, the park, new faces, all on her schedule.

Then a woman applied to adopt her sister Ivy. But Ivy’s foster family had already decided to keep her. We looked at that application again and thought: this is Fern’s person.

We were right. Fern is home in Chicago with a mom who ran marathons and still does halves — so the shy girl who only ever felt safe outside now gets long walks, her favorite thing in the world, multiple times a day.

Three days ago, Toby was riding north in my car from Memphis.

Every dog in this rescue comes to me first — I evaluate each one myself before they go to a foster. Toby stood out right away: a nine-month-old puppy with the calm of a much older dog. When it was his turn to come to Chicago, I was curious how a young Memphis boy would handle the big city.

Turns out, like he was born here. He rides the elevator like a pro. He stays quietly in the back seat on car rides, even though he’d rather be next to you. At the dog park, he lays down and watches the world go by while the other dogs run wild. And when he met his foster mom’s six-year-old nephew — a little boy terrified of big dogs — Toby was so gentle they ended up friends.

He’s 45 pounds of boxer mix with the most adorable underbite, and after coming all this way, one thing is missing: a family of his own here in Chicago.

Memphis is one of the top 5 cities in the country for stray dogs. Sasha, four months old, was one of them.

Two days ago she made the trip from Memphis to Chicago with 10 other dogs. Sara and Tom in Lincoln Square opened their home to all 11 of them — let them run and play in their backyard while fosters came to pick them up. We can’t thank them enough.

Susan had committed to fostering Sasha starting Thursday, even though she was still out of town. Gena — who adopted one of our dogs and clearly can’t stop being wonderful — stepped in to cover Sasha’s first night so she wouldn’t have to wait. Several other people offered to help too. That’s Chicago for you.

Less than 48 hours after arriving, Sasha was adopted. She has a family with kids, a big backyard, and a dog sibling to grow up with.

Four months ago she was born a stray in Memphis. This weekend she’s a Chicago dog with a yard of her own.

Itty-bitty and ready for Chicago! 🐩

Summer is a 6-pound poodle looking for her forever home.

She’s friendly with everyone she meets and gets along great with all dogs. And because she’s a poodle, she’s non-shedding and hypoallergenic.

She’s spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, heartworm negative, and even had her teeth cleaned. She’s all set and ready for her new life.

One note: Summer hasn’t been around small children, so we’re looking for a home without young kids.

Plain Brown Dog, Extraordinary Everything Else

Nobody stops for a plain brown dog. They get scrolled past, walked past, left for last — no fluffy coat, no ice-blue eyes. Truman has spent his whole life being the dog nobody noticed.

Which is ridiculous, because he is one of the best dogs we’ve ever had. Hands down - and that’s the truth.

He’s the gentlest soul in the rescue. He loves every person he meets and every dog he plays with. He does flying zoomies around the yard, then would love to climb all 50 pounds of himself into your lap. Children are his favorite thing on earth.

He’s fostered in Lincoln Square, ready to be adopted. Someone in Chicago is about to get very lucky. We are looking for the perfect family. Apply at merceranimalrescue.org

Update on our big blonde boy.

He slept in air conditioning all night for the first time. No more 100 degrees around the clock.

I brought Norman, the red boy in the video, along to the vet for moral support. Every dog loves Norman. He’s the Mr. Congeniality of this rescue. The blonde boy rode in the car like he’d done it before, not scared, standing there watching everything go by out the window. It makes me think he belonged to somebody once.

He is 58 pounds and there is no muscle anywhere on him. You can feel every bone. The vet puts him at two and a half to three years old, and I’ve been feeding him for almost two of those years. He has been out there on his own nearly his whole life.

He still doesn’t have much appetite. Hot dogs, cheese pizza and dog treats will get him interested, but what will put weight back on him is good canned food. There’s a Hollywood Feed close to his boarding facility that delivers, and Amazon and Chewy both ship right to the door. Message me for the address if you would like to help.

This little girl would love to find her forever home, but she needs a place to hang in Chicago for one week?
She’s sweet, fun, not a barker, loves everyone, great with other dogs. Loves cats & kids.
It’s only a one week foster and we think she’ll be adopted before the week is over.
