Gretchenโ€™s story began with a less-than-stellar start in life right here in our local community. She came to us as a foster through Saving Shepherds Rescue and spent approximately six months in our care, undergoing an incredible behavioral transformation.โฃ

When Gretchen first arrived, she was shy, insecure, and unsure of the world around her. We asked our training assistant, Melissa, to help with her behavioral rehabilitation and trainingโ€”and somewhere along the way, something truly special happened.โฃ

Melissa and Gretchen developed an incredibly strong bond, and we were thrilled when Melissa decided to make Gretchen a permanent part of her family. Since then, this team has continued to grow, learn, and accomplish some pretty amazing things together!โฃ

A few weeks ago, Melissa and Gretchen successfully passed their Therapy Dogs United evaluation, ๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐›๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š ๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐  ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐ฆ! This is something they have worked extremely hard toward for quite some time, and we could not be prouder of them.โฃ

Because Hannah has a close personal connection to Gretchen, she chose not to participate in any of the hands-on portions of Gretchenโ€™s therapy dog evaluation. At ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ช ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ, we take the integrity of every evaluation seriously. Although Hannah prepares and evaluates clients for CGC, CGCA, CGCU, therapy dog certification, and other testing opportunities, she brings in multiple neutral individuals to perform all hands-on interactions and witness the remaining portions of each evaluation. This helps ensure that every result is fair, accurate, unbiased, and earned honorably.โฃ

Today, Melissa and Gretchen attended a local FastCAT trial, where ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐ญ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐๐‚๐€๐“ ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฅ๐žโ€”and ran her fastest personal time to date! ๐Ÿโฃ

For anyone unfamiliar with FastCAT, it is an AKC timed 100-yard dash in which dogs chase a lure while their speed is calculated in miles per hour. It is a fun, fast-paced sport that gives dogs an opportunity to do what many of them naturally love to do: RUN!โฃ

Gretchen and Melissa continue to break down barriers and challenge the misconception that rescue dogs are somehow less capable than purebred dogs. We proudly support both reputable rescues and reputable breeders, and Gretchen is a wonderful reminder that a dogโ€™s beginnings do not have to determine their future.โฃ
