June 20th marks the first day of summer ☀️🏖️, and that means an increase in travel ✈️. When thinking about your travel plans and what to pack 🧳, you also need to think about the needs and arrangements of your pets 🐾! Are they staying home or traveling with you? If you choose to keep them home 🏠, consider these tips to ensure they are best cared for!
Secure Pet Care 🗓️- Before you make any reservations, make sure you have all arrangements in place for your pets like securing a pet sitter!
Pet-Proof Your Home 🔒- We may not think twice about our pets getting their paws on things they shouldn't in our homes, but your pets can act differently when you are away. It is best to make sure that any exposed electrical cords are out of sight and out of reach. Put away or toss any toxic foods or plants that your pets can get into. Put all medications in a high cabinet where your pets cannot reach them (or lock them away if you have a crafty pet). Secure doors and windows, for security, and to help prevent any escapes.
Create A Comfortable Space 🦴- Designating a safe and quiet space for your pet such as a crate or a little nook will help your pet be more comfortable. You can place a nice bed and some of their favorite toys. Even placing a clothing item like a shirt with your scent can help offer some comfort to your pet.
Prepare For Emergencies ‼️- Some of us don't really think about encountering an emergency, but they happen all the time and to anyone! Your flight could delay or cancel. You could encounter bad weather. Your pet escapes! There are so many things to consider, but here are some tips: prepare a list of emergency contacts to provide appropriate authorities during your travel. Provide this list to your pet sitter as well! Consider creating and keeping a pet first aid kit at home. Crate training your pet can help them be more easily secured if emergency transport is needed. These are just a few to name!
Place Collars and/or Microchips 📞- Collars and microchips help pets be found if lost. Very commonly pets are without a collar (namely cats). To help aid search efforts if ever lost, make sure your pet is microchipped or at least has a collar with contact information. Keep in mind, though, collars can be cut or broken and your pet will have a harder time being reunited if found.
There are tons of ways you can help prepare for a successful trip with peace of mind leaving your pets home. Do a little research and create a check list for your pet's stay at home without you.
