URGENT UPDATE: Help Nelson & RV — Dumped, Sick, and Still Fighting for a Future

A few weeks ago, Nelson came running up to one of our EBARR volunteers at a feral feeding site in Concord. Right away, it was clear—this sweet, flame-point Siamese boy did not belong there. He was friendly, sick, and desperately looking for help.

He was suffering from severe diarrhea, and after extensive testing, we discovered the heartbreaking reason: Tritrichomonas, a highly contagious and difficult-to-treat intestinal parasite. It's likely this was why someone dumped him.

The only effective medication—ronidazole—is no longer made. We had to research for an alternative drug just for Nelson. Most cats with this condition are euthanized. But we refused to let that be Nelson's fate.

Thanks to the support of a fellow rescue and our determined vet team, Nelson completed two full weeks of treatment. His symptoms are now gone, he's gaining weight, and today—he was neutered!

But we’re not done yet. At today’s appointment, the vet found:
Tapeworms, Ocular discharge and an ulcer on his tongue
So now Nelson is on 10 more days of medication, and still needs: Repeated testing to ensure the parasite is gone. Continued prescription food and gut support and a loving foster or forever home without other pets while we wait for his clean bill of health.

But that’s not all…

Just this weekend, at a separate feral site just blocks away, our volunteer found a tiny flame point Siamese kitten. He kept darting in and out of an RV storage lot, scared and alone. His rescuer named him RV.

We believe RV and Nelson were both abandoned in the same industrial zone, left to fend for themselves in dangerous, isolated areas by the same coldhearted individual. RV is now safe and eating well, but he still needs:Full vetting, vaccines and neuter, medical care, and a loving foster or foster to adopt.

This is where we need your help.
We’ve already invested so much in saving Nelson, and now little RV needs us too.

Please consider donating to help us cover their care:
Every dollar helps. Every share matters.
Together, we can give Nelson and RV the second chance they never should have had to fight for.

ONE YEAR and STILL WAITING 💔
Cera & Spike have been with us for over a year — and we can’t believe these sweethearts are still looking for their forever home. Now 1 year and 3 months old, this bonded pair has grown up in rescue, and they deserve their shot at a real home.

🧡 Spike is a gentle boy who has come such a long way! Still a little shy, but affectionate once he trusts you. He loves to wrestle with Cera and snuggle up close — just don’t expect him to be a lap cat (yet).

💛 Cera is curious, playful, and sweet. She adores Spike and enjoys quiet companionship with people. She’s not a fan of being held, but she will happily hang out by your side for pets.

Together, they are a perfect match — loving, low-key, and full of potential. With a little patience and a lot of love, they’ll thrive in a quiet, committed home.

🏡 Could that be yours?

If you're ready to give two shy-but-sweet kitties the forever they’ve been waiting for, please visit https://www.ebarr.org/cats-kittens and submit an application.

Finally some good news in the French Fri Department

After working on this adoption for about a week and a half, Leonard went home with his family. When his is new mama originally reached out, she told me that she specifically was looking for a deaf dog. She's had deaf dogs in the past. And she wanted to adopt a rescue special needs dog. She also had bully experience and actually just lost a bully to due to a severe medical issue not long ago.

Over the phone, we told stories of all that we have been through with our dogs and the challenges we faced and how we overcame them because we understood that challenging rescue dogs were the best dogs.

We are so happy for Leonard.

Interested in a french fry
We still have Annie, Louie and Bubbles. Find Annie and Bubbles on our website and Louie right here on our page.

FREEDOM POST FOR MAX — NOW COOPER
From a euthanasia list to a second chance.

Cooper (formerly Max) is finally out of the shelter and safe in our care! This tiny, fluffy boy was scheduled for euthanasia next week, but after watching his heartbreaking video, we knew we had to give him a chance.

At just 4 years old, Cooper lost everything he knew. Surrendered by his owner, confused and terrified, he hid under his bed at the shelter—too scared to even peek out. But today… we had a breakthrough. Cooper came out of hiding and showed us his gentle, loving soul.
You can see it in his eyes—he’s trying to make sense of it all. He didn’t do anything wrong, yet his world was turned upside down overnight. He’s soft, sweet, and just wants a warm lap and someone to love him for life.

Cooper is now looking for a foster or foster-to-adopt home. He deserves comfort, patience, and a second chance at happiness.

Please share his story and help us rewrite the next chapter of his life. Let's show him what love truly means. 💕

Last night, as I was getting off a 12-hour shift, I got a call from two incredibly concerned and compassionate individuals. They had spotted a sweet momma cat and her five kittens coming in and out of a bush in the Red Lobster parking lot in Pittsburg. They were desperate to get them to safety and pleaded for help.

Normally, with rescue resources stretched so thin, my answer would have to be no. But these two didn’t just ask—they acted. They found a local trapper, got traps, and started the hard work themselves. I was so impressed by their dedication, I just couldn’t say no.

They trapped momma and four kittens last night and stayed out there all night long. Early this morning, they got the last baby. Because of their persistence, this little family is now safe.

We’ve teamed up with a local rescue to get momma spayed this Monday. The kittens will follow once everyone’s cleared quarantine.

These are the people that restore your faith in humanity. Both refused to give up.
Stay tuned for updates on this little family. We’ll need fosters and everyone’s support.🐾

We are sad to announce the passing of one of our alum dogs Jewel.

Jewel one of the worst abuse cases we have ever seen ended up being adopted by out trainers and few years back. She was loved and charished by her family and they were very sad to see that her time was near.

Our hearts got out to her family as well as Gina Ledgister who met Jewel at Sage when she was being hospitalized for the long term abuse she endured during her short life. The abuse she suffered was probably a factor in her life being short at under 10 years of age. Abuse like this takes a toll on the body, even if they find a loving home and a loving rescue.

Her story

"I WISH"

“I wish I could help, but I have two dogs.”
“I wish I could help, but my dogs don’t like cats.”
“I wish I could help, but I work.”

Same. Us too. All of the above. Plus kids, chaos, a car that smells like wet dog, and a caffeine addiction that’s spiraling out of control.

Rescuers don’t have some magical setup where all the animals get along, time stands still, and bills pay themselves. We’re just regular people who got tired of saying “someone should do something” and realized… we are someone.

Yes, your life is busy. So is ours. But if you really wanted to help, you’d find a way, even if it’s just sharing a post, donating a bag of food, or offering a ride. You don’t need a cape…just a little less “I wish” and a little more “I will.”

And if your go-to excuse is:
“I wish I could help… but I have dogs.”
Okay… but do you live in a one-room hut with no doors? No crates? No creativity? No common sense?

Because seriously, how is that an acceptable answer to people who are exhausted, overrun, and juggling more animals than you’ve had hot meals?

Rescuers have dogs. And cats. And probably a possum named Earl living under the porch. We don’t have perfect setups or endless time. We just figure it out, because animals in need don’t get to say, “I wish I could survive, but I have fleas.”

So next time, maybe don’t assume your situation is unique. You can help, you just have to want to.

If you'd like to be a part of something life-changing (for both you and a dog in need), something more rewarding than ANYTHING you've ever done, please, apply to foster OR adopt. Fosters are needed URGENTLY... everywhere. It won't be easy but it will definitely be worth it!

Update on Sebastián, the half Persian.

We lost Sebastián last night.😪

He has been fragile for awhile, and we were working a treatment plan for him for severe Irritable bowel syndrome which caused him to lose weight. There was also a good chance he had cancer that we didn't see.

Sebastian came to us in the spring of 2022 after a groomer friend of ours identified and that was concerning. The cats appeared to not be taking care of very well and we were able to get them into our custody. Is they were Sebastián and Sasha. He lived over 3 years in an indoor/outdoor cattio and being an individual and not just a failed breeder cat that somebody de-clawed like an 🫏 hole.

Sebastian lived his life free and cardio one. Even though when he was ill, the best course of action was to confine him in a kennel and restrict everything he ate, I have a strong belief in quality of life. He lived in a cadio for 3 years and I could not confine him to a kennel which would quite possibly have been his last few months........ Which it ended up being.

Even though I know that he was happy, it still feels so bad to wake up and realize you have to dig a hole for your cat that passed away overnight.
Sebastian was a point of focus and many of the cadio video, and he was quite a character.

Fly High lil Buddy. I'm happy you're out of pain but i'm gonna miss you so much.

A feel good post.
We thank goodness for all our supporters and adoptors.

"What do rescues do? This perfectly behaved dog that is able to ride public transit aka bart. Loves all kids (sometimes adults) would not be alive today if it wasn't for a rescue. Hard to believe but almost 14 years ago she was on a euthanasia list. When she was at the shelter she would scream if anyone came towards her. Without a foster pulling her and Without EBARR - East Bay Animal Rescue & Refuge she may not be alive today. I thank the doggo and catto gods every day for all the rescues that try their hardest to help as many as they can. Thank you for being selfless and putting in the time and effort that others will not...(notice the will not and not the can not)."

Mercy had to go to the vet today for a double ear infection, and possibly a UTI.
He was really good with the staff.

A big thank you to the staff for getting us in last minute eventhough it was right after a holiday weekend.

I can't say enough good things about these people.
