Meet big handsome Rocco!

Rocco is currently a resident at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter having had many transitions in his life over the last few months. None being of his own fault. We got to meet him recently for a walk and playtime in the rain, with assistance from the animal behaviorist at the shelter.

In Rocco's case, his trust must be earned when meeting new people. Initially, we walked at a distance, the behaviorist as the handler to let Rocco recognize us as people walking with him. Calm movements and calm demeanor, coupled with hotdog pieces for him to fetch allowed us to close the distance with him. Soon he was taking hotdogs from our open hands! Eventually, the behaviorist was able to hand-off Rocco's lead to us so we could walk him. He recognized us as "friends" and we were able to have leashed playtime with him in the dog run, throwing tennis balls and chew toys to his delight!

Dogs like Rocco find themselves in shelters across the country en masse, again never by their own fault. Sadly most are either euthanized or never see outside the shelter grounds for the rest of their lives. Shelter to Trails believes and has proven with many of the dogs we have worked with that there's a home for every dog, no matter their past or quirks they bring to the challenge.

Rocco will need a devoted and diligent guardian, who would be willing to put in the time and experience with him. As well as multiple sessions with the animal behaviorist at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter to put his trust into confidence. A guardian that will recognize his strengths and his limits in certain scenarios.

As we saw Sunday he warmed up to us rather quickly. When he did, he welcomed us into his world. And we were so honored to be there with him.

All harness accounted for!

Thank you again to all those that donated toward our No-Pull Harness donation drive. Shelter to Trails hand delivered harnesses to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter as well as sent a few to rescue volunteers who could use them on their walks and hikes with current shelter dogs.

We also sent harnesses to Hudson Valley ASPCA located in NY, as well as a nice haul of harnesses to Halfway Home Animal Rescue Team based in New Jersey.

Last but not least, we made a shipment to Bella-Reed Pit Bull Rescue located in Pennsylvania. Here pictured is Bella Blue, their mascot showcasing their colorful new no-pull harnesses and leads!

Shelter to Trails would like to thank these shelters/rescues for their hard work and dedication, as well as all animal welfare organizations across the country. By networking and helping each other as a community, we can all work together for the benefit of every animal in need!

They've arrived!

A few weeks back Shelter to Trails hosted a fundraiser in order to raise money to donate No-Pull Harnesses to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. We also asked volunteers from across the country to let us know if they'd like a donated harness for themselves.

The support was tremendous. We more than doubled our goal in under 36 hours!

We'd like to thank everyone who donated and shared the fundraiser for making this possible!

Over the next week, half of the harnesses will be delivered to Griffin Pond and shipped to the volunteers. The other half we have decided to donate to more shelters and volunteers who need them.

Below in the comments you can tag a shelter or rescue who could use some No-Pull Harness, a great training tool for leash walking. Or if you are a volunteer you can either comment yourself us so we send you a new harness to take some shelter dogs out for their much needed walks and day adventures.

Once again, thank you!

Shelter to Trails believes in making things easier for shelter volunteers, which ultimately gives the shelter animals the most benefit. More help for volunteers equals more interaction, training, and enrichment the volunteers can provide for animals awaiting their forever homes

That said, we are hosting a fundraiser to raise money to purchase "No-Pull" for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

No-Pull Harnesses are made to humanely discourage pulling. Harnesses in general give a more balanced, less harmful distribution of resistance than collars do. This gives the handler better control, which in turn makes leash training easier and walks more enjoyable for both dog and handler. The No-Pull Harness has an extra added contact point for a leash in the front chest area to discourage pulling and makes for more efficient leash training on their daily walks. Leash manners are important for every dog, but for shelter dogs they are most important. This will help them find their forever homes much quicker.

Our goal is to raise enough funds to buy six good quality No-Pull Harnesses. Five for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter and one which we would like to give away to a follower who volunteers at their local rescue or shelter. And if we surpass that goal we'll give away more no-pull harnesses to volunteers. Comment below to enter, with the name of the shelter or rescue you volunteer for. There's no need to donate, any volunteer can be a part of this! Once we meet our fundraising goal, Noche will pick the winner!

And as always, thank you for your continued support of our mission!

It's been a minute since we have updated on here, but Shelter to Trails has been busy!

Thanks to your Food Drive Fundraiser donations we have just about reached our goal of dispersing all of the funds raised into food items to rescues and shelters that need it! This included a personal delivery to Toledo Humane in Ohio last month to drop off a care package! We also sent Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Rescue in VA/MD packages of canned and dry food to help feed their senior fosters! This past weekend we personally delivered food and litter to Second Chance Animal Rescue in NY (another foster based rescue) and got to see some of their adoptable pups!

All of these rescues and shelters are working overtime to help, transport, care for, feed, foster, promote, and adopt out animals across the country. Whatever little or lot that we can do adds up and goes a long way. Anyone can get involved however it suits their schedule. As always, we encourage others to do whatever they can in their own way. It means the most to these animals!

We are trying to exhaust our last bit of donations so if you have any suggestions on rescues that could use food donations, feel free to comment here with them!

And as always, thank you for your support!

Meet Mazzy!

Actually you may already know her as Shelter to Trail's alumni Kourtney, who was renamed Harley by her adopter. Fresh starts and fresh adventures means a fresh name. She seems to love her new name and is already responding famously to it!

The background story: Shelter to Trails was contacted last week by her adopter who adopted her back in September. Unfortunately due to circumstances, he believed that rehoming her would be best for her. We at Shelter to Trails believe in doing what's best for a dog, putting their needs first. Within minutes we had a plan. Harley (now Mazzy) was surrendered back to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter and went immediately into foster care with our friend and advocate Natalie on Saturday. Mazzy didn't have to spend a second in a kennel again and to us that is important.

Mazzy got to spend time running in the yard playing with Noche on Sunday. She is spending her days until we find her a new forever home with the best pack of canine foster sisters and brother.

Mazzy is amazing with other dogs and loves people, but would be best suited in a home without cats. She is young and energetic. A real happy go lucky cinnamon girl who would benefit most with someone who can walk, hike, run, swim, and give her loads of time socializing and playing with other dogs. She's everything a Shelter to Trails dog embodies!

If you or anyone you know thinks they'd be a good fit for Mazzy, please contact Griffin Pond Animal Shelter and fill out an application. She is located in northeastern Pennsylvania, but we would be willing to travel if it meant a proper meet and greet after an approved application.

We are also sponsoring her adoption fee.

Let's find Mazzy a forever home! Please share!

Last week Shelter to Trails made another food donation in the name of community outreach and helping those who need it most. We were introduced by Mack ( on IG) to a rescue organization in White Plains, NY who hosts a food pantry!

Strong Paws Rescue () and their founder Meagan created the food pantry 9 months ago to service the Lower Hudson Valley region as well as New York City, giving aid to those experiencing homelessness with their pets, to domestic violence shelters in NYC that allow animals, other rescues, community animal feeders and anyone who asks for help. They send out shipments, make deliveries, as well as present pop-up kiosks with food and goods for the taking. In these times more than ever, this is such an incredible outlet to provide.

Of course we were happy to send a healthy donation of pantry items to Strong Paws to disperse wherever it needs to go. Keeping cats and dogs' bellies happy and full.

This is all thanks to your donations toward our on-going Food Drive Fundraiser that makes this possible. Shelter to Trails plans on keeping the momentum going with these donations and keeping you informed of them, so you can see where and to whom they are being shipped off to and delivered. As well as showing how other organizations are doing their part!

We are always open to new ideas from our followers of places to ship food deliveries. We will ship anywhere within the lower 48 states. You can contact us here via DM or leave a comment below! Spread the word! And as per usual, we have our fundraiser link live for those who want to help us help others.

Thank you again!

It's kitten season! Sounds like an exciting time of year, right?

In reality this means strays and outdoor cats that aren't fixed are mating and inundating shelters with newborn kittens. Rescues and shelters across the country do their best to prepare for this time of year, but it's overwhelming. Especially this year when these shelters/rescues have seen slowed donations due to COVID-19 related social distancing measures and financial hardships.

This week Rachael has taken in 3 newborn kittens through Griffin Pond Animal Shelter to help care for and bottle feed. It's quite a commitment, but one that will set the tone for these three babies on their way to their lives in loving, caring, forever homes.

Shelter to Trails encourages all who can to help where they can this time of year. Whether it be by fostering or donating kitten food, formula, litter... or simply pledging a financial donation toward your local rescue organization. As always we also have our on-going food drive fundraiser (link is in our Instagram page bio) to help support shelters, rescues, and individuals in need of help with food items. In fact, last week we donated about 200 cans of cat food to Felines & Canines in Chicago by suggestion of Gabrielle Johnson to help stock their kittie rations.

We all have the ability to do something. More than ever in these strange times, something is better than nothing.

And anything can go a very long way!

This week we sent ten cases of canned dog food to Ruffhouse Rescue's southern border location in Texas. Weather is getting warmer down there and we noticed a plea for canned wet food to make sure the dogs down there are getting their proper nutrients and hydration. This is all because of your donations and support! We thank you for your continued generosity in these tough times.

Ruffhouse Rescue is based on Long Island, NY. However, they have a satellite property in Texas which they utilize to pull dogs down south from kill shelters. Every week transporters drive dogs from Texas to New York to be put into foster care or into their kennels until they find a foster home.

Dogs like Josie, Wildfire, Steele, and Rosie (and her beautiful puppies) here travel the distance to start their lives anew whereas otherwise it would have been cut abruptly short. It's pretty amazing the chain of volunteers involved with every transport. The teamwork, the devotion, and the communication is second to none.

Since our trail activities with shelter dogs are on temporary hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, the key is to focus on what we as volunteers CAN do! We encourage all those currently spending more time locally to reach out to your area shelters and rescues to inquire how you can get involved.

Can't do that? Our food drive fundraiser is currently still active in our bio and we are always accepting suggestions for shelters and rescues in need of our help.

Thank you again!

Gus here is no stranger to change, as all shelter dogs are. Gus understands that a change in times means a change in purpose. Gus knows best.

With recent events we have decided instead of raising funds to donate food to winning shelters via our Food Drive... we will be donating food to food pantries, struggling shelters, and pet owners who have come into financial stress.

The months ahead will be tough for many, with folks losing their jobs and shelters struggling to maintain donations and resources. Unfortunately this could result in people surrendering their pets and animals being euthanized.

Our goal is to help where we can with your help, while still maintaining social distancing practices.

We are asking for recommendations on your local pet food pantries, typically found at your local rescue or shelter. These pantries are a valuable asset to community outreach. Also if you see a shelter or rescue in dire need of dog or cat food, shoot us a comment or message. Anywhere in the contiguous 48 states we can ship to.

Our fundraiser is still active via the link in our bio. Every little bit can make a big difference. Suggest and donate.

We'll do the footwork.

03/23/2020

Recent current events have given many a lot of time out of work and at home.

There's been a movement to give these folks the opportunity to foster and volunteer, whereas they may not have thought they had the time to beforehand.

For PJ this means being able to get down to the rescue organization Ruffhouse Rescue in New York where he adopted Clove to run some dogs at night. These dogs need that human interaction, some more than others as you can tell from the video. He's taken to one in particular to work with named Sagamore. A pit mix who needs to burn those energy reserves first and then work on calm training.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Ruffhouse Rescue has gotten over 60 animals into foster homes and had over 80 adoptions. This one on one period of time in a new home with their new guardian gives an adopted animal comforting and attentive adjustment, which can take weeks. Sometimes months.

Feeling like you could do more with your time while keeping up with social distancing and hunkering down on the homestead? Reach out to your local shelter or rescue and get some details on fostering, volunteering, or anything you can help with.

Now's a better time than ever.

Shelter to Trails

It started as a simple idea and became a movement. To give current shelter dogs awaiting adoption the opportunity to exercise, socialize, and explore in the great outdoors. We’re volunteer based, country-wide. Just giving shelter dogs the chance to “wild” the way they should.
