Mare Monday with todays newborn Boys 🤪

Let’s talk Placentas! That nasty sac of gump that has housed your little baby for 11+/- months comes after your baby and is by all accounts a very important piece to pay attention too.

Everyone should know the 1.2.3 rule of foaling out:
Hour 1 - baby should stand
Hour 2- baby should have nursed & passed /be passing meconium
Hour 3- Mare should have passed placenta.

By hour 4 you need to be calling someone to start oxytocin shots. A retained placenta can cause problems fast and can end with loosing your mare. Be sure you spread it out and make sure it’s ALL there and none stayed in.

Mare Monday Question!

I’ve been asked/ told several times over the years; “ A stud will bring my mare in heat to breed when I bring her to you.”

This is not how it works unfortunately or breeding would get much simpler. If this worked for you, your mare already had a follicle size big enough to breed on and was already in heat. While their are mares that will “show heat” to a stallion anytime they get around one, to the point of sometimes letting one mount an cover them, that doesn’t mean they are breedable and will take. Those mares make EXCELLENT tease mares for stallion Collection days. I personally own one and she’s worth her weight in gold for it.

Simply putting it a mares cycle on average is every 21 days (give or take a few days). This means she will ovulate a follicle every 21+/- days and that is what you have to have in order for your mare to start the process of creating a embryo.

A mare with a 10mm follicle, no edema, not secreting the correct hormones,will not just build to a 35mm and ovulate that day because she was teased by a stallion.
