Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day. Nearly 1,000 home fires each year are accidentally started by pets. Here are some tips to help ensure your pet does not start a house fire, and to keep it safe in case of fire.

* Make Sure Fire Alarms Are Working: This is for the safety of everyone in your home.
* Extinguish Open Flames: Your pet should not be left unattended around active cooking appliances, candles, or fireplaces. Extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
* Consider Stove K***s: Stoves and cook tops are the most common ways a pet can start a home fire. If your pet can reach them, remove stove k***s or cover them when not cooking.
* Use Flameless Candles: Cats and dogs can start fires when their tails knock over lit candles.
* Secure Curious Pets: Keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home, such as in their crate or behind a baby gate.
* Alert First Responders: Display a pet alert sticker so that first responders know there’s a pet inside your home.
* Be Prepared to Evacuate in Case of Fire: Keep leashes near the door for a quick exit. Create an exit plan and practice it. Make sure your pet has ID (collar with tag and microchip) in case it escapes.

As we prepare for the Fourth of July, we want to remind you that our hospital will be closed for the holiday.

Now is the time to plan ahead for your pet’s comfort and safety.

Loud fireworks, unfamiliar guests, and hot weather can all be overwhelming for pets. To help them stay safe and calm:

• Prepare ahead of time with any needed medications or supplies
• Keep pets in a secure, quiet space indoors
• Double-check ID tags and microchip info
• Use music or white noise to reduce stress from fireworks

Wishing you and your furry companions a safe and peaceful holiday. For more tips on holiday safety, visit https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/petcare/july-4-safety

A reminder as the weather warms up. Don't leave pets in parked vehicles.

Even on mild days, the temperature inside a car can rise dangerously fast, putting pets at serious risk for heatstroke or worse. Cracked windows and shady spots doesn't keep them safe.

If the temperature outside is 70 degrees, your car can hit 104 degrees in just 30 minutes. At 80 or 90 degrees, it gets even worse. That heat builds quickly and puts pets at serious risk of heatstroke and death.

Young, senior, overweight, or short-muzzled pets are especially vulnerable.

If you’re heading somewhere pets can’t go, it’s best to leave them home where it’s cool and secure.

If you see a pet in distress inside a hot car, try to locate the owner or call 911.

Let's keep our pets safe this summer.

It's National Pet ID Week - a terrific opportunity to remind pet owners to double-check that their pet's identification is up-to-date. If you've recently changed addresses or phone numbers, be sure your contact information is updated on your pet's microchip. Your veterinarian can help with that!

April is Heartworm Disease Awareness month. Heartworm cases are regularly reported throughout the state of Oregon. Your pet's exposure to parasite-carrying mosquitoes increases with outdoor activities in areas that have high mosquito counts, but even indoor-only pets can be infected. Please protect your pet with heartworm preventive medication year-round, as recommended by your veterinarian.
