Took these two paddleboarding today for our Saturday adventures (separately of course). Samara and Gambit loved it! I may have to take them out to the big water next time!

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday today, communities across the country will be filled with parades, festivities, and fireworks well into the evening.

Thankfully, my dogs are well accustomed to loud noises and are completely unfazed by fireworks. In fact, they'll often sleep right through them! Even so, every one of my dogs will be safely at home today. The dogs currently in my training program will be safely at home as well.

The reason isn't the fireworks—it's the heat.

Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for dogs, and heat-related illnesses can develop much faster than many people realize. I love my dogs, and Gambit goes almost everywhere with me, but I love him too much to expose him to unnecessary heat and stress.

Please consider doing the same for your own dogs. Keep them safe, cool, and secure at home whenever possible. If they must be outside, make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water, adequate shade, and a cool place to rest.

As someone who truly loves dogs, I would hate to see a preventable tragedy simply because someone wanted to take their pup out in a festive bandana or patriotic outfit to join the crowds. They'll still be just as adorable at home—and much safer.

Have a wonderful Independence Day, enjoy the celebrations, and please keep your four-legged family members safe.
