Sri Lankan star tortoises are a fantastic choice for the serious tortoise keeper. Adult animals usually reach 8–10 inches in shell length, giving them a striking presence without the massive space requirements of larger species such as leopard tortoises, or red foots. Their bold, crisp star patterns make them one of the most visually stunning tortoises in the hobby 🐢

They thrive with stable conditions that reflect their tropical origins, doing best with daytime temperatures in the 85–90°F range, a basking area around 95°F, and consistent access to quality UVB for proper shell and bone development. Moderate to higher humidity, roughly 60–80%, helps support smooth growth and prevents common shell issues, especially in younger animals. A diet built around high fiber grasses and leafy greens, paired with proper calcium supplementation, keeps them growing steadily and correctly

The Goliath bird eating tarantula [Theraposa stirmi] is one of the largest tarantula species in the world, with adults commonly reaching 8–10 inches of leg span and carrying a lot of mass compared to most species 🕷️

They’re terrestrial, ground dwelling spiders that rely on size and presence rather than speed or color, meaning they tend to stay visible, even when provided deep substrate and proper cover.

This is a species best suited for more experienced tarantula keepers. They require consistently warm, humid conditions, deep substrate for burrowing, and minimal handling. While generally not aggressive, they are defensive, fast when they choose to be, and equipped with potent urticating hairs. Their care is straightforward once parameters are stable, but they are not forgiving of mistakes

Scaleless Everglades rat snakes [Pantherophis quadrivittatus] are a unique twist on a naturally hardy, active species. They keep the same curious, alert personality and manageable adult size or 4–6 feet but with the added visual interest of the scaleless trait, which really highlights their coloration and pattern in a way scaled animals don’t

They’re generally beginner friendly for keepers who are willing to be a little more intentional with husbandry. Care is straightforward, but scaleless snakes benefit from clean enclosures, proper humidity, and smooth furnishings to protect their exposed skin. In managed care, rat snakes are long lived, with lifespans often reaching 20+ years

Eastern Hermann’s tortoises are one of the best choices for a first time tortoise keeper! 🐢

Adults typically stay around 7–8 inches, which makes them far easier to house, feed, and accommodate long term compared to larger species like red foots or leopard tortoises that nearly require room sized enclosures.

Hermann’s are hardy, alert, and do very well with proper basking heat, strong UVB, and a high fiber diet of grasses and greens. For someone new to tortoises who wants a species that’s manageable, and rewarding Eastern Hermann’s are an excellent place to start.

They do require more space and proper semi-aquatic setups, but for experienced keepers who enjoy building naturalistic enclosures and working with a smarter, more engaging species, caiman lizards are worth the effort. Join us in welcoming our newest surrenders, Frankie (3 years old, blue) and Winnie (1.5 years old, lutino), a bonded pair of Quaker parrots to Excelsior Exotics 💛

As with all new surrenders, they’ll be given time to decompress, and be thoroughly evaluated before they are ready for adoption. When they are ready, Frankie and Winnie will be looking for a calm, quiet home, ideally without any young children (however older, respectful kids may be considered), as they can be nervous in busy, or loud environments

In the meantime, stay tuned for more updates, or feel free to private message us to submit an adoption application for when they are ready 🙂
