Do you take delight in being cheap / frugal and DIY something that is a readily available product for purchase? I DEFINITELY do.

So, here's one I found and am sharing with you FOR FREEEEEEEEEE!

DIY Flock Armor Dewormer Recipe:
23% black pepper
23% cayenne pepper
21.5% garlic powder
15% chili pepper flakes
12.5% dried oregano
5% flax seed

Now, yes, that's very specific percentages. I don't think its that critical. The recommended "dosing" is 1 quart of this mix to a 50lb bag of feed. So here's how that recipe roughly maths out (and what I *actually* measured) -
92c (very heaping 3/4c) black pepper92c (very heaping 3/4c) cayenne pepper86c (heaping 3/4c) garlic powder6c (heaping 1/2c) chili pepper flakes5c dried oregano 2c (light 1/4c) flax seed

You're welcome. Enjoy your chickens without pasty butts.

This sweet friend visited with me for quite a while. (In case you didn't know - pines have pollen, too!)

When's the last time you just stopped & watched nature do its thing?

Next fruit tree PSA:

The dark, sticky ooze on this plum tree is a symptom known as gummosis. In stone fruit trees like plums, this amber or dark-colored sap is more of a symptom or response to various potential stressors, including environmental damage, insects, or disease. The trick is figuring out which one so you know what to do about it...

Some of the main potential issues:
•fungal disease
•Black Knot
•environmental stress or winter injury
•insect damage

Once you determine the cause, then you can explore treatment options.

Spring pests PSA: these are Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). They are a native species in Wisconsin and are very common on apple, cherry, and crabapple trees during the spring.

"They" say it's not necessary to manage them, but if you have a lot of young / baby fruit trees, they can be quite damaging as they can completely defoliate a young tree.

The hard thing is, they're also a hearty food source for a lot of birds, and I love my backyard birds. When I looked it up, the most common ones in my yard that eat them are: Orioles, Black-capped Chickadees, Blue Jays, Cedar Waxwings, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Northern Cardinals, various spring Warblers, American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Wild Turkeys.

If needed, you can use Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), a natural biological spray that only affects caterpillars and is safer for other beneficial insects like bees. You can also tear open the silky web & drop them into a bucket of soapy water.
