⏰🐾 Weekly Critter Care Tip #32: Time Changes Affect Pets Too!

🕞Turning the clocks back may give us an extra hour, but our pets don’t understand why their routine suddenly changed. Their internal clocks are often closely tied to feeding times, medications, bathroom breaks, walks and when family members leave or return home.

🐾 Some pets may become restless, wake up earlier, ask for meals at the “old” time or seem confused when evening arrives sooner. Senior pets, young animals and pets with anxiety or medical needs may be especially sensitive to changes in their routine.

💊. You can help your pet adjust by shifting meals, walks and bedtime gradually in 10–15 minute increments over several days. Keep medication schedules consistent with your veterinarian’s instructions, offer an extra bathroom break if needed and give your pet a little additional patience while their body clock catches up.

🐶 With darkness arriving earlier, remember to use reflective gear or a light during evening walks and keep pets closely supervised outdoors. Most pets will settle into the new schedule soon with consistency, reassurance and a little extra understanding. 💙🐾

🎃🐾 Monthly Community Giving 🐾🎃

Today, Critter Care dropped off October’s pet food donations at our local community pantries.

To help support both dogs and cats in our community, I’ll be donating:

🐶 Dog food/treats to the pantry by the hospital.

🐱 Cat food/treats to the pantry at Ebenezer church.

I’ve also included photos of the treat packaging and ingredient lists in case any pets have food sensitivities or dietary restrictions.

💙 Please take only one treat bag per family so there’s enough to share with several local families and their pets.

Happy Halloween furry kiddos! 🐾🎃👻

A few sweet faces from one of my weekly Critter Care crews! 🐾💙

Regular visits give me the opportunity to learn each pet’s personality, routine and comfort level. One member of this crew is especially shy and still only allows an occasional touch, but building trust takes time. I’m happy to move at his pace and let him decide when he’s ready—we’ll get there!

Whether they prefer playtime, treats, outdoor adventures, cuddles or simply some quiet companionship, each member of the crew receives the individual attention they need. I always enjoy spending time with them each week!

🐾 A little update to my message hours 🐾

I’ve been replying into the evenings and on weekends, but I’m setting a clearer routine so I can balance Critter Care and family time.

Messages sent after 5 p.m. on weekdays will get a reply the next business day. Messages sent over the weekend will get a reply on Monday. If I’m caring for your pets, I’ll respond during their scheduled visits.

🐾Thanks so much for understanding! 🐾

🐾 Weekly Critter Care Tip 31: Check Those Paws! 🐾

As the weather gets cooler, this is a great time to start paying a little extra attention to your pet’s paws. 🐶🐱

Paw problems can be surprisingly easy to miss, especially with pets who have lots of fur between their toes.

Every so often, take a quick look for:

🐾 Cracked, dry, or irritated paw pads
🐾 Redness or swelling between the toes
🐾 Broken or overgrown nails
🐾 Small cuts, sores, or foreign objects
🐾 Excessive licking or chewing at the feet
🐾 Limping or suddenly avoiding putting weight on a paw

Don’t forget those dewclaws, either! Because they don’t always contact the ground, they may not wear down naturally and can become overgrown.

A quick paw check only takes a minute, but it can help you catch a small problem before it becomes a much more uncomfortable one.

And as we head toward winter here in Wisconsin, getting into the habit now is especially helpful before snow, ice, and sidewalk salt arrive! ❄️🐾💙

🐾I was so happy to be welcomed back to care for this sweet crew! This visit called for a little extra attention: their young pup started her first heat, so I made sure she was closely supervised during potty breaks—even in the fenced yard. Their two senior pets also got extra care, with a gentle pace and close attention to their comfort and routines. Every pet has different needs, and I’m grateful for the trust to care for each one.❤️🐾

🐾🍂 Weekly Critter Care Tip #30: Be Seen as the Days Get Shorter! 🍂🐾

Fall is here, and that means our daylight hours are getting shorter too! Many morning and evening dog walks are now happening at dusk or in the dark.

A few simple additions can help keep both you and your pup more visible:

🐾 Reflective collars, harnesses, and leashes
🐾 Clip-on LED lights or light-up collars
🐾 Reflective gear for yourself too
🐾 A flashlight or headlamp for darker routes
🐾 Extra caution near driveways, intersections, and roads

Even if you can see an approaching vehicle, that doesn’t necessarily mean the driver can easily see you or your dog — especially smaller or dark-colored dogs.

And remember, visibility is important even if you’re only heading out for a quick potty break near the road.

A little extra light or reflective gear can make a big difference in helping everyone get home safely. 🐾💓

🍂🐾 Weekly Critter Care Tip # 29: What’s Hiding Under Those Fall Leaves? 🐾🍂

Crunchy leaves are one of the best parts of fall — and plenty of dogs love sniffing, digging, and playing in them! 🍁🐶

But those leaf piles can hide a few things worth watching for:

🍁Fleas and ticks — Cooler fall weather doesn’t mean these pests are gone. Ticks can remain active during surprisingly cool weather, so continue checking your pets after time outdoors and follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for parasite prevention.

🍄‍🟫Mushrooms — Damp fall weather and decaying leaves create great growing conditions for mushrooms, and some can be toxic to pets. It’s safest not to let pets eat any wild mushrooms.

🌰Acorns, sticks, and other debris — Leaf piles can hide things that may become choking hazards or cause gastrointestinal problems if swallowed.

🐾Wildlife and critters — Small animals may also use piles of leaves and yard debris for shelter, so curious noses may occasionally find more than they bargained for! 😂

🍂Mold and decaying vegetation — Wet piles of leaves can develop mold and bacteria. Pets with allergies or respiratory sensitivities may be especially bothered by them.

So absolutely let them enjoy those wonderful fall smells and crunchy leaves — just keep an eye on what that curious nose discovers underneath! 🍂🐾💙
