Wonderful opportunity to own an older Coton. Dudley, 6 years old, was bred by (retired) MCPC breeder Stephanie Davis and is located in
Lancaster, PA. His owners, with great sadness, have both been diagnosed with terminal diseases, are searching for someone who will love their silly boy as they have. She writes the following:
Dudley is full of energy! He is always ready to play and go out to a park for a walk, and does need the exercise. I take him out 3-4 times, so he has plenty of opportunity to do his business. If he really needs to go, he will come to you and may appear fidgety. Play is mostly tug-of-war and I just hold his toy in my hand and move it about as he growls. As you know, our Cotons tend to be noisy when they play. He loves to run when you toss a toy, but that doesn't mean he gives it up, even though he comes to you. Dudley loves to sniff on his walks and is always on the lookout for squirrels. When we sit out back, he's always scanning for squirrels. A fence would be a big plus. Since squirrels tend to run up trees, if he does run, he ends up barking up the tree. When he hears a noise, he will alert you, but barking is only seconds long, never extended.
Dudley does great in the car, front seat or back, long trip or short. The vet has always told me he is protecting me when we are outside and he barks at another dog. I keep him close to me and quietly say "walk, walk". When he sees someone we know, he goes toward them with a bark, and stops as soon as they pet him - that's just the way he greets. If Dudley sees me/us go out, he will bark, but again, that is short-lived, probably less than 30 seconds. He settles quickly and has the run of the house. He has never gotten into anything what-so-ever. I would never keep him in his crate when I/we go out, and he is always calm when I/we return. We have left him at home when we've gone to my daughter's house for Christmas dinner, with no problems.
Dudley's behavior indoors, such as at the kennel, is awesome. When he is at the kennel, which is a real canine country club, they adore him and always tell me he is the perfect gentleman! He tends to want the attention of adults rather than mingle with other dogs during group, but has never had a problem when inside a facility. The staff enjoy providing the cuddles Dudley needs. When I was in the hospital in 2023, he spent 14 straight nights at the kennel and did very well, in their words, one of their best guests. Dudley is one of those dogs who watches TV. I believe the really bright ones tend to do that. He is fine watching horses, cattle, but will react to cats or dogs in commercials. This is always short-lived - seconds, but I do flip the channel when those commercials come up.
For as spunky as he is, Dudley really needs his cuddle time. He loves to be petted and will enjoy, and truly needs, his rubbies and huggies for as long as you will give them. He is a total teddy bear and so devoted and in love with me! He won't go to bed on his own, but stays with me. He sleeps in his own bed which is on my bed, at the bottom corner.
I have Dudley groomed about every 5 weeks; 6 in the cold months. He is very healthy and up-to-date with his vaccines. The only thing he absolutely needs is to have his g***s expressed every 5-6 weeks, and I have the vet to this because they are able to be more thorough than the groomer. I also give him a daily chewable probiotic, which really helps with his poops. Once a month, he gets his chewable Nex-Guard Plus for fleas and ticks. We have deer that come through here, especially in the fall and winter months, and there are definitely ticks in the winter.
