Sometimes, caring for the caregivers is one of the most important things we can do. 💙

If you visited Chicago Animal Care and Control today, you may have noticed a very special bus parked outside our shelter.

Today, we were honored to welcome back Jill Angelo, Founder of The Moon Dog Farm and Well Being Facilitator, who spent the day offering free wellness sessions for our staff and volunteers aboard her incredible “Underdog” bus.

Working in animal welfare is deeply rewarding… but it can also be emotionally demanding. Every day, our team and volunteers experience joy, heartbreak, hope, loss, and everything in between. Compassion fatigue and burnout are real, which is why opportunities like today’s matter so much.

Jill has visited CACC before to support our team, but today marked the debut of her beautiful wellness bus… a peaceful space where staff and volunteers could pause, reflect, recharge, and simply breathe. We’re so grateful to everyone who stopped in to spend time with her throughout the day.

This month has also reminded us how important it is to invest in the well-being of the people behind the work. Earlier this month, Anna from Busy Body Retreats hosted a restorative sound bath for our staff and volunteers as part of our wellness efforts, and we were also fortunate to have live musicians filling our shelter with calming music during our CACC Sound Sessions (Shout out to The Rosenthal Family Foundation ❤️).

These moments don’t take away the difficult parts of animal welfare… but they help sustain the people who show up every single day for Chicago’s animals.

A heartfelt thank you to Jill for sharing her time, compassion, and the magic of Moon Dog Farm with us. We look forward to welcoming her back in August, and we’re excited to have Anna return in September for another sound bath session.

Because supporting the people who care for animals is just as important as caring for the animals themselves. ❤️

Access to basic veterinary care can be the difference between a pet staying in a loving home and a pet ending up in a shelter.

Ghost had been shaking her head and scratching at her ear. Her owner came to CACC's front door from Austin looking for help. Instead of having to surrender her, they connected with our 360@CACC team, and Ghost was connected to a Community Medicine appointment.

The exam found an aural hematoma, a pocket of blood inside the ear flap, along with an infection in the outer ear canal. Ghost started on Prednisone to bring down the swelling and itching, Animax ointment to treat the infection topically, and preventative vaccines.

Once the infection cleared and her ear healed, Ghost came back to the Lurie Clinic to be spayed. With her ear healthy and her spay complete, her treatment plan was finished, and she got to stay happy and healthy at home.

Su dueño llegó a la puerta principal de CACC desde Austin buscando ayuda. En lugar de tener que entregarla, se conectaron con nuestro equipo de 360@CACC, y Ghost fue referida a una cita de Medicina Comunitaria.

El examen encontró un hematoma auricular, una acumulación de sangre dentro del pabellón de la oreja, junto con una infección en el canal auditivo externo. Ghost comenzó con Prednisona para reducir la hinchazón y la picazón, ungüento Animax para tratar la infección de forma tópica, y vacunas preventivas.

Una vez que la infección se resolvió y su oreja sanó, Ghost regresó a la Clínica Lurie para ser esterilizada. Con su oreja sana y su esterilización completa, su plan de tratamiento terminó, y pudo quedarse feliz y saludable en su hogar.

Nevada spent six months scratching, sometimes until he bled.

His owner Johnny had already taken him to the vet once, but the follow-up care Nevada needed was out of reach. He didn't know where else to turn.

When Johnny came to the Chicago Animal Care and Control intake line, our 360@CACC team connected Nevada to a Community Medicine appointment at the PAWS ChicagoLurie Clinic instead of a surrender.

The exam found a skin infection and likely allergies. Nevada left with Prednisone, Clavacillin, medicated shampoo, Bravecto, and vaccines, all at no cost, and went home with Johnny the same day.

This is what keeping people and pets together looks like: providing access to services so a dog gets to stay in the home that loves him.

Su dueño Johnny ya lo había llevado al veterinario una vez, pero el cuidado de seguimiento que Nevada necesitaba estaba fuera de su alcance. No sabía a dónde más acudir.

It's hot out there. Chicago has seen extreme heat again this week, with near-record temperatures, and the intake line at Chicago Animal Care and Control means people and pets are waiting outside in it. Some are bringing in a sick animal, some are facing the hard decision to surrender a pet, others are turning in a stray they found. Our 360@CACC team is there to make that wait a little easier by offering ice water for owners, baby pools for pets to cool off in, and shaded areas for anyone in line.

Most of the time, people don't want to give up their pet. Housing restrictions and financial strain are often what bring them to that line. While people wait, our team is also connecting them to resources like spay/neuter services, pet supplies, and other support that can help keep a pet healthy and keep families together so surrender isn't the only option.

Chicago ha vuelto a tener temperaturas extremas esta semana, cercanas a récords, y la fila de admisión en Chicago Animal Care and Control significa que personas y mascotas esperan afuera bajo ese calor. Algunas traen un animal enfermo, otras enfrentan la difícil decisión de entregar a su mascota, y otras entregan un animal callejero que encontraron.
