Dog Sports & Dress Codes

What are athletes allowed to wear while training or competing?

In many sports — track & field, running, volleyball, gymnastics — it’s totally normal to wear shorts, crop tops, or form-fitting gear.

No one questions it. It’s accepted. It’s sport.

But who decided in dog training that the only acceptable uniform is cargo pants and a plastic vest that feels like a sweaty potato sack?

Is there a rulebook somewhere that says you must look like that to be taken seriously in dog sports? Are these outfits a requirement for success?

What kind of body do you need to be “allowed” to wear shorts?

What size bust is small enough for a sports bra to be acceptable?

Are tight clothes only for people under 30?

And once you’ve given birth — are you supposed to live in oversized shirts and long pants forever?

FACTS 👇

There are no rules about how a dog trainer must dress.

You can absolutely train your dog on a summer field wearing the same breathable clothes people wear in other sports, if you want to.

And if that makes someone uncomfortable, maybe they should reflect on why.

Women have always been policed — by age, by body shape, by their sport.

They should not, because it’s nobody’s business.

I’ll keep showing that it’s up to YOU what you wear.
Yes, I do like to poke a little with my outfit choices.
I’m old enough. I’m bold enough. I’m brave enough.

And I’m successful enough to completely crash some people’s patriarchal fantasy that I’m just some bimbo influencer who doesn’t actually know how to train dogs and is just performing herself online.

Some I inspire. Some I bother.
And personally? I love doing it my way.

Off leash Pack Walk!
⏰Sunday July 20th at 9am
📍My house in Chester, Ma

🌳A mile-ish trail that loops through the woods behind my house
🐶This Pack Walk is limited to past or present clients ONLY
💲Cost is $20
❗️Your dog must be friendly / neutral around other dogs
🐶LIMITED TO 5 DOGS
🐶I highly recommend your dog has some form of recall; E collars or long lines are recommended
❗️This is NOT fenced in nor can I guarantee what kind of wildlife / distraction we may see. Every owner is 100% responsible for their own dog.

🏔️Also just a heads up, I live on a mountain so the first 1/2 of the walk is a decent incline and there’s some slight steepness coming back down. Decent walking/hiking shoes also recommended.

None of these bullets are to freak anyone out, I just want everyone to be aware! It should be a fun time and also a decent work out for everyone! 🐾👣😊

Can you tell that Aspen is actively talking to Booker here? Can you see what she’s saying?

If you guessed her head position, good job! Aspen’s very obvious turn of her head away from Booker is her polite way of telling him she has 0 interest in an interaction.

Booker can be very dog reactive and a bit of a bully so laying near another dog but giving her space was a great exercise for him on this hot day!

Tip of the day for puppy owners: Puppies rarely just “grow out of” behaviors.

If you let them practice jumping, mouthing, chewing the leash, peeing inside, etc. they will continue to do so when they’re full grown.

One of my clients today said to me “When I was a kid, it didn’t seem like dogs had as many problems as they do today. It seems like so many dogs are aggressive and neurotic”

She isn’t wrong.

Dogs today and dogs from 40-50 years ago are very different. Why?

People.

Dogs not only used to have purposes; farm dogs, guard dogs, hunting dogs, pest control, etc. Dogs also roamed around outside and did a lot of taking care of and fending for themselves.

Nowadays obviously that just isn’t feasible but the vast difference isn’t that dogs aren’t roaming the neighborhood anymore, it’s that dogs aren’t expected to do ANYTHING except be cute and cuddly. What I see every day as a professional dog trainer are people who treat dogs like literal babies.

People who don’t want to teach their dogs “no” or any kind of consequence. People who think it’s cruel for their dog to be alone for longer than 47 seconds, to get wet from the rain, or think they won’t eat unless there’s filet mignon on their food.

People are raising dogs to not think, problem solve, learn, or work through ANYTHING. In return, we get dogs who panic when their owner walks away from them, dogs who freak out if they see another dog, dogs who have 0 idea what to do if the slightest change enters their environment.

Don’t even get me started on their health either.

It is ok for your dog to be nervous or stressed when working through a new situation. It is ok to have your dog be alone sometimes. It is ok to let your dog figure some things out; like how to jump into the car, how to go down stairs. You don’t have to do it for them, you just have to help guide them. Let them learn how to do it.

Teach and guide your dog, but remember they are predatory animals, not fragile newborns. They don’t need to be babied.

🐾This is a FREE service if you’re a past or present client and $10 if you’re just joining in!

🐾This is a decently wide trail (wide enough for a car) that walks along the Westfield River! This is a popular trail for walking, biking, fishing, and dog walking but dogs are required to be leashed.

🐾Please let me know if you’re coming by the night before so I have an idea of who will be showing up!

❗️Service here can be spotty, especially in the beginning of the trail and in the parking area❗️

My group class absolutely KILLING it! I’m so proud of how well everyone is doing; dogs and people.

Tonight’s class tackled a few things; adding 3D’s (Distance, Duration, Distraction) to their “sit” and “down” commands as well as some polite greeting practice (this video) and ended with some Red Light Green Light with heeling and sits and downs! (check my story😊)

Tis the season for PUPPIES ☺️

Come bring your 8-16 week old puppy for a puppy social!

Puppy social will include tips & tricks for crate training, house training, leash walking, & how to introduce your puppy to new people and dogs (and anything else) properly!

We will do some basic exercises and puppy games and you can allow your puppy to greet other people and play with other puppies (if you want!)

Saturday May 24th from 1:30-2:30pm at the Fur’s A Flyin’ Pet Grooming building at 69 Ferry St in Easthampton, Ma

Cost is $25

❗️This is ONLY for puppies 8-16 weeks old ❗️
