Happy New Year from everyone at AMC! We hope you all are having a great start to 2019 and had a wonderful holiday with your four legged family!

'Tis the season! Before you deck the halls make sure you get pet safe decorations! Holly, mistletoe, poinsettias and tinsel can all put a damper on your pet's holiday! Read more about potential dangers in the article below!
Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Remember, even though we are sure everyone has plenty of yummy left overs, not all of them are safe for our pets!
Stay away from anything cooked with onions, garlic or lots of spices. Fatty foods, like turkey skins and gravy, are also bad for you pet. And of course, never let them eat any of the bones! 🐶🐱🐾
With our first snow fall comes road and side walk salt! Salt can be detrimental to your dog's paw pads. If your dog does get exposed to salt, wiping their paws when they come inside can help prevent further irritation. There are a variety of pet safe salts on the market you can purchase.

There have recently been multiple confirmed Leptospirosis cases in New England. While it has always been a threat in this area, local veterinarians are seeing more of it this year. Lepto is a potentially life threatening bacterial infection that primarily affects the kidneys and liver. It can spread to both animals AND people. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk, however some symptoms to look for if your pet is not protected are increased drinking and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and weakness. Please call us if you have any questions or would like to talk about getting your pet vaccinated for Lepto.
The Animal Rescue League of Boston has issued a public alert regarding an uptick in the number of Leptospirosis cases they have seen recently. The ARL said they diagnosed three positive cases of Leptospirosis...
Hope you all had a happy Halloween! We would love to see pictures of your pets dressed up. 🐶🐱
Over here at AMC we hosted a Trunk or Treat. It was a hit to say the least! 🎃👻
Flea and tick season is about to be at its peak!
Did you know that the fall is the worse season for not only ticks, but fleas especially?
Please make sure you stay on top of giving your flea/tick preventative this season.

Fleas are so abundant in the fall many pet owners believe their flea prevention program isn't working! Home infestations are more likely to happen in the fall.
ATTENTION CLIENTS: PLEASE READ
In July of this year, the FDA announced an investigation into a link between Grain Free diets and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM is a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and the muscles become thin. This does not only result in leaky heart valves but a decreased ability of the heart to function as an effective pump. Generally DCM is seen in large breed dogs (Dobermans, Great Danes, St. Bernards, Boxers, etc.) however the big concern with grain free diets is that we are now finding DCM in unexpected breeds (Goldens and Labradors). While the exact issue with Grain Free diets is still under investigation, cardiologist are concerned a Taurine deficiency may be the root cause. If your pet is on a raw or grain free diet, please contact us to find out what steps to take next.
Do you keep rat poison in your house? If so, please keep this in mind.
D-Con Rodenticide is a common rat and mouse bait familiar to most people. Traditionally this product was an anticoagulant, that is, it caused the body to become deficient in vitamin K and the animal would bleed to death.
Recently the formula was changed. The new product contains high levels of Vitamin D3. An overdose of Vitamin D3 causes dangerously high levels of calcium in the blood resulting in kidney failure and death. This is much more difficult to treat even if caught early.
If you use this product it is extremely important pets do not have access to it. If you suspect an accidental ingestion, emergency decontamination is essential. Seek veterinary care as soon as you become aware of it!
We are sure you are all aware of the Canine Influenza outbreak, however if not, there are now 9 confirmed cases in Ct (Guildford). With that being said, if you are planning on boarding or grooming your dog in the near future, give the facility a call to see if they are requiring the vaccine. Also, we recommend that if you are doing any sort of boarding, grooming, or even going to the dog park more then twice a year with your dog, he or she should have the vaccine on board. Please call the office at (203)-439-2597 if you would like to come in for the vaccine and get your dog protected.
For more information on the Dog Flu you can read about it below.
Hope all is well with everyone!
Hi All! Dr. Montresor will be in the office August 11th to work a Saturday with us! We are so excited to have her back. Call to schedule your appointment today while we still have a few slots left!
Happy Summer! With all the beautiful weather ahead of us we are sure many of you will be traveling! If you intend on boarding your pet make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.
For dogs the Bordetella vaccines is very important, if not mandatory, to have if you are boarding him/her. This will help protect them against kennel cough. Some facilities will also require the Dog Influenza vaccination. Make sure you check with which kennel on what your pet needs in advance! If they do need a booster or vaccine history give us a call and we would be happy to help!
Happy 4th everyone! The office will be CLOSED tomorrow Wednesday July 4th!
Hope you all have a great day! 🐾
