COVID 19 Update/New Policies effective 3/19/20:

Just a quick update on our procedures. Once again, we will remain open for our clients as long as we are allowed by the state and our staff remains healthy. AMC is dedicated to protecting the health of our clients, patients, team members and their families. During the rising threat of COVID19, we have decided to alter our guidelines to try to remain open in order to be able to continue to take care of our patients. We hope that taking these measures aids us in achieving this goal. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time as we all work together to try to keep everyone healthy. As the days go on, these policies may be changed or altered but are as follows effective 3/19/20.

New Hospital Policies Effective 3/19/20:

All clients will need to remain in their cars! When you arrive for your appointment, please call the office at (203) 439-2597 to let them know you have arrived. From there a team member will come out to your car and bring your companion into the hospital. After the exam, a doctor will call you with findings, recommendations and a treatment plan. A team member will call you to get payment over the phone or you are welcome to send a credit card in with your companion at the time of transport.

For medication and food pick-up, please call ahead at (203) 439-2597. We will take payment over the phone and bring the medicine out to your vehicle. We also have an online pharmacy on our website. Go to https://animalmedicalcare.vetsfirstchoice.com/ and click the online pharmacy link. Place your order and it will be delivered to your door. (Food too).

Please alert us if you or anyone in your family has been ill or traveled outside of the immediate area. We can still treat your pet but we will need to take extra precautions.

We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we are doing our best to answer phones in a timely manner and adapt to this new workflow!
Also thank you for your continued patience and support! This is a very difficult time for everyone. We are going to do everything we can to remain available to you and your pets.

Stay healthy and wash your hands!

Hope everyone is doing well during this COVID-19 outbreak:

We here at Animal Medical Care of CT wanted to take a moment to share the steps we are taking to keep our employees, clients and patients healthy during this time.
At this time Animal Medical Care of CT we will continue business as usual. We are already cleaning and disinfecting regularly with antiviral products. We will increase our cleaning during this time, especially frequently touched objects (credit card machines, door handles, ect..) In addition, we will try to reduce human-human contact, In an effort to minimize exposure and limit the close contact that happens in our lobby and exam rooms, we are encouraging clients to stay in their car and call us when they arrive and we will bring you directly into an exam room. If you are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, immune compromised or have been out of the country within the last 14 days of your appointment to let us know prior to your visit. We would be more than happy to meet you at your car and take your pet in for any necessary treatments.
During this time, we would like to strongly encourage our clients to order their pet food and medication through our online pharmacy. These items can be shipped directly to you in the comfort of your own home. If you have any questions regarding the online service please do not hesitate to give us a call. https://animalmedicalcare.vetsfirstchoice.com

We will get through this as a community, our hope is we can stay open and seeing patients. Thank you for your support and understanding. We hope everyone stays safe and healthy.

In addition, we have been fielding a number of questions about the Corona Virus in animals. Most species have a corona virus that we see from time to time, but it is not the same as the COVID-19.

The link below is a fact sheet from the American Veterinary Association that comprehensively and correctly answers many of the questions that you may have thought of. As always, please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you,
Dr Kristine Matz

What a great success story!
We were called out on a ER farm visit a few months back for a horse that had lacerated her leg on a metal post.
After many stitches and a tremendous effort by the owners keeping it clean throughout the healing process, the mare is now sound and back to playing with her pasture mates! 🐴

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Remember, even though we are sure everyone has plenty of yummy left overs, not all of them are safe for our pets!
Stay away from anything cooked with onions, garlic or lots of spices. Fatty foods, like turkey skins and gravy, are also bad for you pet. And of course, never let them eat any of the bones! 🐶🐱🐾

With our first snow fall comes road and side walk salt! Salt can be detrimental to your dog's paw pads. If your dog does get exposed to salt, wiping their paws when they come inside can help prevent further irritation. There are a variety of pet safe salts on the market you can purchase.

Animal Rescue League Warns of Uptick in Leptospirosis Cases

Hi all,
There have recently been multiple confirmed Leptospirosis cases in New England. While it has always been a threat in this area, local veterinarians are seeing more of it this year. Lepto is a potentially life threatening bacterial infection that primarily affects the kidneys and liver. It can spread to both animals AND people. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk, however some symptoms to look for if your pet is not protected are increased drinking and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and weakness. Please call us if you have any questions or would like to talk about getting your pet vaccinated for Lepto.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston has issued a public alert regarding an uptick in the number of Leptospirosis cases they have seen recently. The ARL said they diagnosed three positive cases of Leptospirosis...

ATTENTION CLIENTS: PLEASE READ
In July of this year, the FDA announced an investigation into a link between Grain Free diets and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM is a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and the muscles become thin. This does not only result in leaky heart valves but a decreased ability of the heart to function as an effective pump. Generally DCM is seen in large breed dogs (Dobermans, Great Danes, St. Bernards, Boxers, etc.) however the big concern with grain free diets is that we are now finding DCM in unexpected breeds (Goldens and Labradors). While the exact issue with Grain Free diets is still under investigation, cardiologist are concerned a Taurine deficiency may be the root cause. If your pet is on a raw or grain free diet, please contact us to find out what steps to take next.

Do you keep rat poison in your house? If so, please keep this in mind.
D-Con Rodenticide is a common rat and mouse bait familiar to most people. Traditionally this product was an anticoagulant, that is, it caused the body to become deficient in vitamin K and the animal would bleed to death.
Recently the formula was changed. The new product contains high levels of Vitamin D3. An overdose of Vitamin D3 causes dangerously high levels of calcium in the blood resulting in kidney failure and death. This is much more difficult to treat even if caught early.
If you use this product it is extremely important pets do not have access to it. If you suspect an accidental ingestion, emergency decontamination is essential. Seek veterinary care as soon as you become aware of it!

About Canine Influenza | Dog Flu

Hi All,
We are sure you are all aware of the Canine Influenza outbreak, however if not, there are now 9 confirmed cases in Ct (Guildford). With that being said, if you are planning on boarding or grooming your dog in the near future, give the facility a call to see if they are requiring the vaccine. Also, we recommend that if you are doing any sort of boarding, grooming, or even going to the dog park more then twice a year with your dog, he or she should have the vaccine on board. Please call the office at (203)-439-2597 if you would like to come in for the vaccine and get your dog protected.
For more information on the Dog Flu you can read about it below.
Hope all is well with everyone!

Happy Summer! With all the beautiful weather ahead of us we are sure many of you will be traveling! If you intend on boarding your pet make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.
For dogs the Bordetella vaccines is very important, if not mandatory, to have if you are boarding him/her. This will help protect them against kennel cough. Some facilities will also require the Dog Influenza vaccination. Make sure you check with which kennel on what your pet needs in advance! If they do need a booster or vaccine history give us a call and we would be happy to help!
