The Joint Committee on Public Safety is planning to hold a hearing on July 14 regarding House Bill 2547 - "Nero's Bill."
Nero's Bill was proposed in the wake of the murder of Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon and the shooting of his police dog, K9 Nero. Due to provisions of Massachusetts Law, K9 Nero was not allowed to be treated for his serious injuries by emergency medical personnel working at the scene. Instead, officers were forced to drive Nero to the nearest veterinary hospital in the back of a police cruiser as they fought to keep him alive. Fortunately, he recovered. However, the incident shows the importance of protecting the working dogs who help to keep us safe. Nero's Bill would allow animals injured in the line of duty to receive the emergency medical care they need and deserve.
As you likely know, Rep. Xiarhos is the lead sponsor of this legislation this session, and it is also of very personal importance to him as the former Deputy Chief of Police in Yarmouth.
