๐ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO A WATER CHANGE ON A SEVERELY NEGLECTED AQUARIUM?
Believe it or not, sometimes you can actually lose fish after doing a water change!
Here's why:
When an aquarium has been neglected for a long period of time, harmful waste builds up, and water parameters can become extremely poor. Over time, fish may become accustomed to those unfavorable conditions.
When you suddenly introduce a large amount of fresh water, especially if there are significant differences in water chemistry, temperature, or pH, it can shock the fish and cause severe stress. In some cases, this can lead to fish loss.
You might think, "I'm giving them nice, clean water. Why would they die?"
Unfortunately, making a major change too quickly can sometimes do more harm than good.
HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
โ
Always use a quality water conditioner when replacing tap water. Tap water can contain chlorine or chloramine, which are toxic to fish.
โ
Avoid making drastic water changes all at once in a severely neglected aquarium.
โ
Make gradual water changes to allow fish time to adjust to improving water conditions.
โ
Monitor temperature and water parameters throughout the process.
REMEMBER: Clean water is important, but how you get there matters just as much!
A healthy aquarium isn't just about changing the water. It's about maintaining stable water conditions for the health and safety of your fish.
