🎆 Keep Your Pets Safe This 4th of July! 🎆
July 4th is statistically the #1 day for lost pets in the U.S. The fireworks, crowds, and festivities can be overwhelming for our furry companions. Here’s how to keep them safe and secure — before, during, and after the celebrations.
🔄 Before the 4th: Prepare Early
1. Desensitize Your Pet to Loud Noises
Use positive reinforcement (like high-value treats) while gradually playing sounds like fireworks or thunder. Start with a low volume and increase slowly over several days. Consistency is key!
2. Learn to Recognize Stress Signals
Look out for panting, drooling, pacing, or clinginess — all signs your pet may be anxious. Create a calm space with white noise or the TV and offer comfort, in case needed.
3. Check ID Tags and Microchips
Make sure your pet’s collar has a current ID tag. If they’re microchipped, log into the chip’s registry to confirm your contact info is up to date. Keep recent photos of your pet on hand just in case.
4. Stock Up on Calming Aids
Ask your vet about anxiety medication or try calming chews/sprays — but always do a trial run before the big day to watch for side effects.
🎇 During the Festivities: Stay Alert
1. Keep Pets Indoors in a Safe Space
Set them up in a quiet room away from windows and loud noises. TV, white noise, or calming music can help ease their nerves.
2. Secure All Windows and Doors
Even screens won’t stop a panicked pet. Lock windows, close doors tightly, and use deadbolts if needed. Some pets can open latches!
3. Supervised Potty Breaks Only
Always leash your pet, even in a fenced yard. Loud booms can trigger escape attempts. Ensure collars are snug — you should be able to slide two flat fingers underneath.
4. Keep Pets Away from Fire and Fireworks
Curious noses don’t mix well with flames or sparklers. Keep all fireworks, grills, and flammable materials well out of reach.
5. No Table Scraps — Only Pet-Safe Treats
Foods like onions, grapes, garlic, chocolate, and even fatty meats can be toxic. Provide pet-safe treats and remind guests not to feed your animals.
6. Protect Their Paws and Keep Them Cool
Use the 5-second hand test on pavement: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Keep them indoors during peak heat and make sure they stay hydrated.
7. Keep Sunscreen and Bug Spray Out of Reach
These products(including candles and tiki torches) can be harmful if licked. Apply them to yourself away from your pet and store them securely.
8. Soothe Anxious Pets
Use calming music, gentle petting, and a reassuring voice. Let them hide if they need to — just make sure they’re safe.
🎆 After the Fun: Yard Safety Check
Before letting your pets out again, scan your yard for leftover fireworks debris, skewers, or any trash that could harm them. Even used fireworks can be toxic or cause injury.
💙 With just a little preparation, you can help your pets feel safe and calm — and avoid a stressful or tragic situation. Have a safe and happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸🐾
