Earlier this week, we got an email about a kitten trapped under a car.
We don't normally handle trapping calls, but by pure luck, it happened to be just down the road from where one of our volunteers works. She figured she'd stop by and see if she could help.
Six hours, several cars, and one determined kitten later... Meet Keanu.
This tiny kitten bounced from car to car, refused every attempt to coax him out, and somehow managed to keep an entire crowd of concerned strangers on their toes. With the help of incredible Good Samaritans, AMC employees, and a lot of patience, we finally got him safely into our hands.
The family whose car he was originally hiding in believes he rode all the way from Georgia to Tennessee before they stopped to catch a movie.
Unfortunately, Keanu didn't come away unscathed. He had burns on his chest, a singed ear, and significant swelling on his face. First thing the following morning, we rushed him to the vet, where they cleaned and treated his injuries and discovered the culprit behind the swelling: a giant botfly larva buried in his face (that was so big, the staff named him Gerald).
He's now safe, comfortable, on antibiotics, and already feeling much better. Once he's fully healed, he'll be looking for a forever home, so keep an eye out because this little movie star will be available for adoption soon.
Rescues like Keanu's aren't something we budget for. They're the unexpected phone calls, the emergency vet visits, and the moments where we simply decide, "We're going."
