What is an IPP pig? The Idaho Pasture Pig (IPP) is comprised of Duroc, Old Berkshire, and Kune-Kune pigs. The IPP is a true grazing pig breed having a very gentle nature, naturally friendly, intelligent, and great personalities that lack the aggression of other pig breeds. The IPP was developed with grazing being a primary concern and developing a breed that has a medium-sized, upturned snout that gives them the ability to eat grass while also having a well-developed shoulder area that leads into a long level back while having hams being proportionate to the rest of the body. Although IPPs are grazing pigs, they do need grain for the lysine, minerals, and added hay as a supplemental feed to help keep feed costs down. Idaho Pasture Pigs are smaller than traditional pigs, being the perfect size for families and homesteading. The sows mature to be 250–350 pounds; the boars mature at 350–450 pounds. Since this pig feeds primarily on grass, the meat has a deeper red color, is well-marbled, and is laced with buttery fat. Processing age is between 9-10 months of age.
When you raise an Idaho Pasture Pig, you get a smaller-sized pig with a great disposition that grazes primarily on grass that has some of the most amazing pork you have ever tasted.
