It's TAKEOVER TUESDAY with Parrot Ps and Qs!

Someone brilliant said, "When we know better, we do better!" Some form of that is often attributed to Maya Angelou. I think it applies beautifully to parrot people.

In the '70s and '80s we had some people giving advice on how to treat parrots in the home. They weren't particularly science-based but they often gave good (or better) information.

Starting in the '90s we had more access to science-based information and that trend has exploded and is still rising today.

We're understanding that we can train all members of the parrot family, just as we can train dogs and cats and horses and...well, you get the idea. Animals that were once considered "untrainable" or "incapable of learning" are proving these ideas w-r-o-n-g!

Do you have a bird that has had multiple homes in its lifetime, as I do? That individual is still capable of learning!

Got a bird that may have been exposed to some heavy-handed techniques, punishment, abuse? Still capable of learning!

An old bird? Young bird? You guessed it - capable of learning on both fronts.

Here's a recommendation: take classes. Take them more than once so that you digest the information. Never assume you've learned all there is to know. Information changes and we need to stay up to date.

Over your head or frustrated? Hire a professional behavior consultant and/or trainer. It is absolutely worth the investment in your relationship with your parrot and their future in your home.

Parrot food for thought!

Almost have everything back to what passes for normal after being gone for four days!

I wanted to take a moment to praise my TEN clients who made it a priority to attend the Phoenix Landing Foundation Wellness Retreat this past week. You are truly committed to expanding your knowledge, even perhaps a bit past your comfort zone, in order to give your birds more better lives.

Kudos! I'm so proud of each and every one of you!

For those of you who didn't know about it or couldn't come, it's offered every two years. The location is Asheville, NC at the University of NC - Asheville. It's always Saturday and Sunday, with four presentations running at the same time. Very reasonably priced and the presenters are very accessible to the attendees. There's literally something for everyone.

Start planning now to attend the next one!

Big hugs!

It’s TAKEOVER TUESDAY with Parrot Ps and Qs!

What’s on my mind is safety. And accidents. And preparation.

We should NEVER take our birds outside unrestrained. That’s the safety part.

Accidents happen. That’s why we can’t ever avoid them 💯 % of the time. No matter how careful we are.

Preparation is the key to keeping our birds safe. Let’s plan to have our bird safely ensconced in a sturdy carrier, both outside and in the car (in the backseat, away from the air bags, secured by the seat belt)

As someone who goes on a fair number of hunts for missing birds, it’s heartbreaking. Imagining how afraid the bird must be. How confused.

And for the caregivers who may never know what happened to their feathered family member, or who learn the worst.

Isn’t it worth the extra effort we put into keeping our birds safe?

Parrot food for thought. Feel free to chime in below.
