It was the dogs. The dogs are what got me.

A few years ago we visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum, and we saw a lot. Twisted steel girders. Baby-faced portraits of the deceased. Mutilated emergency vehicles.

But it was the dogs that wrecked me.

The dog exhibit is pretty small. Located in the far corner of the museum, with photographs of search and rescue dogs.

You see dogs nosing through rubble, wearing safety harnesses. You see them in their prime. They’re all deceased now. But they were spectacular.

There was Riley. Golden retriever. He was trained to find living people. But, he didn’t find any. Instead, he recovered the remains of firefighters. Riley kept searching for a live survivor, but found none. Riley’s morale tanked.

“I tried my best to tell Riley he was doing his job,” said his handler. “He had no way to know that when firefighters and police officers came over to hug him, and for a split second you can see them crack a smile—that Riley was succeeding at doing an altogether different job. He provided comfort. Or maybe he did know.”

There was Coby and Guiness. Black and yellow Labs. From California. Surfer dogs. They found dozens of human remains.

And Abigail. Golden Lab. Happy. Energetic. Committed. Big fan of bacon.

Sage. A border collie. Cheerful. Endless energy. Her first mission was searching the Pentagon wreckage after the attacks. She recovered the body of the terrorist who piloted American Airlines Flight 77.

Jenner. Black Lab. At age 9, he was one of the oldest dogs on the scene. Jenner’s handler, Ann Wichmann, remembers:

“It was 12 to 15 stories high of rubble and twisted steel. My first thought was, ‘I can't send Jenner into that…’ At one point, [Jenner] disappeared down a hole under the rubble and I was like, ‘Ugggggh!' Such a heart-stopping moment..."

Trakr. German Shepherd. Tireless worker. Worked until he couldn’t stand up anymore. Trakr found Genelle Guzman-McMillan, who was trapped for 27 hours among the debris. Genelle was as good as dead, until the cold nose poked through the mangled steel.

Apollo. German shepherd. An NYPD police dog. Coal-black muzzle. Liquid eyes. The first dog on the scene, only 15 minutes after the attacks. Apollo worked 18-hour days. Once, he was nearly killed in a fire during his search. But Apollo had been drenched in water and he was quick on his feet. No injuries.

Jake. Labrador. As a puppy, Jake was found on the side of the road in Dallas. Abandoned. Left for dead. Like trash. He had a dislocated hip and a broken leg. They made him a rescue dog.

Jake worked until his body threatened to collapse from exhaustion. After his shifts, local New York merchants saw his rescue-dog vest and treated him to free steak dinners in upscale Manhattan restaurants.

And, of course, there was Bretagne. Golden Retriever. Easygoing. Dutiful. Obsessed with food. Her owner and trainer, Denise Corliss, a firefighter from Harris County, Texas, brought Bretagne to Ground Zero while the rubble was still hot.

Bretagne went straight to work. She worked for 10 days solid. Ten agonizing days. Bretagne never quit. She napped onsite.

Denise recalls: “...There are images of Bretagne going to where she was directed to search, into the unknown, the chaotic environment. But even then, she knew who needed the comfort of a dog, and which firefighter needed to hold her close and stroke her fur.”

After 9/11, Bretagne also helped recovery efforts during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and Ivan. She retired at age 9.

Old age finally overtook her, she had a hard time using stairs, so Denise installed an above-ground pool to keep Bretagne’s joints limber.

In retirement, Bretagne became a reading dog at a local elementary school. First graders, too shy to read aloud, would read to a white-faced, elderly retriever who looked them in the eyes and smiled.

Bretagne visited students with special needs. She visited students with autism. She visited everyone.

She suffered kidney failure at age 16. She was put to sleep on June 7, 2016, and became the last of the 9/11 rescue dogs to end her earthly career.

Bretagne hobbled into the Cypress, Texas, animal hospital, one sunny Monday, only to discover the sidewalks and hallways were lined with firefighters, first responders, and rescue workers who saluted her.

Her remains were later escorted from the hospital, draped in an American flag.

We do not deserve dogs.

One of my favorite things to do, is getting to give "puppy" it's first groom. I feel so privileged to be given that trust and I take making pup's first experience a good one very seriously. Today, was a good day. I got to do a few of my faves and ended my day getting to groom this adorable baby. Life is good sometimes!

With the weather outside chilling our bones, now is the time most automobile owners are checking, changing, and/or topping off antifreeze in their cars and trucks. While this is a necessary maintenance for automobile owners, it presents an unwanted opportunity for poisoning our pets. Here are some things you need to know:

1. What is antifreeze? Ethylene glycol, or antifreeze, is a brightly colored, sweet tasting liquid found in most garages. It is not only toxic to cats and dogs, but humans as well.

2. Ethylene glycol itself is not toxic, but when it is metabolized in the body, it becomes severely toxic to the kidneys. Antifreeze poisoning presents some of the most severe kidney damage seen by veterinarians.

3. How do pets get poisoned? Obviously spills while changing antifreeze present a prime opportunity. Remember that the taste is sweet making it tasteful to both cats and dogs (and even small children). But there doesn't have to be a large spill. For cats who often sleep under vehicles, a dripping radiator could be just as deadly. Simply getting ethylene glycol on the paws and then licking is often enough to cause serious poisoning.

4. What are the signs of ethylene glycol poisoning? Each individual can display different symptoms, but there are typically three stages.

Stage 1 - Within 30 minutes - The signs include lethargy, vomiting, incoordination, excessive urination, excessive thirst, hypothermia (low body temperature), seizures, and coma.

Stage 2 - 12-24 hours after ingestion- Some of the signs seem to dramatically improve, luring pet owners into a false sense of security. However, during this stage, dogs become dehydrated, and develop an elevated breathing and heart rate.

Stage 3 - 36 - 72 hours after ingestion - At this stage, signs of severe kidney dysfunction, which is characterized by swollen, painful kidneys and the production of minimal to no urine, may occur. Progressive depression, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, seizures, coma, and death may be seen.

4. Can my pet be saved? Yes and no. Your pets chances for survival desperately depends on how quickly medical treatment is rendered.
Do not wait; time is of the essence and immediate treatment is essential! Pets must be treated within 8-12 hours of ingesting antifreeze, as the antidote only has a narrow time period to work.

The other option for treatment is dialysis. However, this is typically available at universities and select practices only. The nearest veterinarian may be able to give prolonging time until you can reach a facility that does in fact perform dialysis.

Our Story

Welcome to All Around Town Mobile Pet Spa... providing all the benefits of a grooming shop without ever leaving home. I come to you, in my custom built truck, and groom your Kitty or Pup in your driveway. Mobile means wonderful things for you and your furkid - no travel, no cages, no other animals around, no long time away from home for them and no more running back and forth for you. What you get is 35+ years experience, one on one pampering for your loved pet, and less stress for you both.

I’ve always been involved with animals... When I was a kid several of my neighbors showed dogs so I got an early start doing shows with them and helping them ready their little ones for the ring. Along the way I bred/showed guinea pigs and rabbits, showed my own dog and by the time I turned 18 started to show cats. I’ve bred/shown now for 34 years and have had great success in and out of the ring. I believe that our little furry ones deserve the best and that means in food, training and care and I’ve devoted my life to providing those things to my pets and those of my clients.

For years I did the “corporate thing” but something was always missing and so, about 20 years ago I started to get back involved with caring for animals. I started off training again and then worked for a local groomer. After he passed unexpectedly it was “oh now what” and a friend suggested Mobile.. she knew I was a self starter, enjoyed people and pets and so she loaned me her truck on the days she wasn’t using it.. and I fell in love.

Mobile is a wonderful way to care for your little one as it’s a lot less stressful for all involved. You really have the opportunity to build up a relationship with your clients (both fuzzy and human) and I’m pleased to have had many relationships become friendships as well. I was twice voted Detroit Metro’s #1 groomer and was in the top five (both Detroit A List and Channel 4’s Best of) My last 9 years or so in Michigan. While I’m a good groomer, I believe it’s my customer service skills and individualized care that brought me those achievements.
