I am sure all of you are "feeling the burn" outside and we are braced for record heat over the next several days.
I am seeing heat related/dehydration related issues and felt it important to put out some pointers to help you help your critters get through this mess.

1. KEEP THEM DRINKING/HYDRATED
How, you ask...
Clean your water buckets/troughs/tanks/pasture tubs more often in hot weather. Water buckets can sour quickly in the heat with just a few pieces of hay or grain remnants and horses won't drink "sour water". As my favorite barn owner says, "If you won't drink out of it, neither will they".

Always provide access to clean, cool water. Horses prefer the temperature of water to be between 45 and 65 degrees F. It's not necessary to add ice to their buckets or things such as that but if you can manage to keep a bucket in the shade, it will help.
A horse will normally consume between 6 and 10 gallons in cool weather and that can easily double in the heat, due to sweat loss alone.

Provide free access to salt to promote drinking. Loose salt is preferred over a salt block but a block is better than nothing. Just watch those horses who like to over-indulge on the blocks as salt toxicity is a real thing.

Supplemental electrolytes can help offset sweat loss but I realize some horses don't like the taste. You can soak your grain and add them to that or even use a paste form for direct administration. (See your friends at McDonald Feed, McCoy's, Tractor Supply, Monroe Hardware, or Mane Street for paste electrolytes)

There are wonderful things like RepleniMash from Purina, Horse Quencher from SmartPak, Chug from Equine Elixirs, Accubites Replenish from Manna Pro, and about 3000 other forms to get electrolyte replacement into horses in more palatable ways.

I'll even share a recipe for "Tea":

Use a small bucket - 8 qt or 2 gallon size.
Add1/4 cup Sweet Feed (or something similiar like Senior)
Add 1/4 cup Forage Pellets (Alfalfa preferred but anything will work)
Add 1 scoop of electrolytes
Then fill the bucket with water.

The horse has to drink the water to get to the soaked sweet goodness at the bottom. Hence, hopefully, getting some replenishment into their bodies.

For the love of all of us having to brave this experiment of living on the surface of the sun, I am with you! My antiperspirant stopped working last week despite twice daily applications and my sweat glands feel like they are on steroids. The inside of my truck reeks of things I don't want to identify. My washer must have been moonlighting with Rosetta Stone because I could swear I hear foreign language curse words every night when I start yet another load of laundry.

All of this to say, we'll get through it together. Just be on alert and monitor all your animal's behaviors during this time. (yep, the littles can suffer the effects of the heat just like the bigs)
A little bit of common sense goes a long way.

DRINK YOUR WATER!!!

I have had a few cases of Heat Stress over the past week and a lot of my Seniors and COPD/asthmatic horses are having difficulty with this weather. I love this graphic from the UMN Extension program as well as the link in their original post (shared here) with great tips on managing horses in hot weather.

Please pay close attention to your horses behaviors in this weather and make sure to keep yourself hydrated too!🥛🫗💧💦

🌡️🔥 Hot weather can significantly increase the risk of heat stress in horses. Knowing what's normal for your horse — like their typical temperature, heart rate, and behavior — can help you spot early warning signs and take action before things get serious.

Help your horse beat the heat by:
💧 Providing free access to fresh, cool (45 to 65 degrees F) water.
🌳 Making sure horses have access to shade throughout the day.
🧂 Providing free access to salt to promote drinking.
💦 Rapidly cooling hot horses by applying continuous cool water over them.
❌ Limiting trailering or exercising horses if possible.
