Excessive exercise can create an irritable dog. Use moderation and Obedience in your exercise to avoid potential behavior problems.

We see a lot of problem behaviors created by wild play that has no rules or boundaries.

Play is a fantastic facilitator for learning. But that learning is either advantageous or not.

In private lessons with clients I get this question a lot. "Will my dog grow out of this?"

The answer... Maybe.

Understanding the motivation of a behavior is really important. When we understand the "why" we can better answer the original question.

For example.

Cranky behavior from a tired puppy. This often looks like destructive chewing, biting when over aroused, jumping and scratching.

Will this go away with age? If proper sleep is provided these behaviors tend to improve immediately. But also with age comes less a need for sleep and better self regulation.

So yes. It can improve with age.

But lets say you are playing with your dog in a manner that encourages destructive behavior. All gas no breaks type of play. Whenever your dog wants to play it comes up, jumps on you, barks at you and forces you to play.

Then once play begins you are scratched and beat up in that play and only able to stop when the dog wants to stop.

Will this go away with age?

Maybe. When the dog is so old it no longer wants to play.

However the bad habits created in that inappropriate play will likely manifest in other destructive ways.

We cannot assume that age will solve our problems. As I have found in life. Problems left unaddressed typically become bigger and worse with time.

Age can lower the physical energy need of a dog if a consistent cardio routine is not present in the dogs life.

So to answer your question of "Will my dog grow out of this?"

Sort of...

Happy Friday everyone.

Comment below with your tales of behaviors you thought your dog would grow out of.

Be your dogs guide in this human world. So many frustrations people experience with their dogs are a direct reflection of not understanding their dog is an animal and not a furry human. Assume they do not know any better and show them the proper way until they show you they "get it".

This sweet goofball is here learning to not use his mouth so much in play.

He loves to interact with people. He now needs to learn to do so in a way that doesn't hurt so much.

So gar so good.

🐾 Daycare Dog Spotlight: Angus! 🐾

Angus first joined us in Spring 2023 for our Day School program, and we’ve been lucky to have him as a regular in daycare ever since. ❤️

He’s now one of our go-to helper dogs—calm, steady, and a comforting presence for pups who are reactive or a little unsure. His confidence helps them settle in and feel safe. 🐕

In this clip, you’ll see Angus working with Trainer Courtney on going around objects on cue—just one of the fun, mentally engaging activities we build into his daycare routine to keep him sharp and stimulated! 🧠✨

We might say he’s a staff favorite… but let’s be honest, they all are. 😉

🎥 Check out the video and give Angus a little love in the comments!

Our Story

Best Paw Forward was founded by husband and wife team, Michael and Jamie Badial, after years of working with hard to adopt rescue dogs in both our own rescue for aggressive dogs as well as with other local rescues.

Having both grown up with an innate love of dogs, we are able to help owners understand why their dog does certain things and effectively communicate with their dog about what they should do.

While working with dogs each day brings us so much happiness, our real joy comes from restoring peace and harmony to the home and helping owners to live with their dog the way they had always imagined.
