The year is passing soon, thus we wanted to quickly take a moment to wish all our course partcipants and clients a happy holiday season and a happy and prosperous Year 2018!

2017 has been quite successful. We concluded the first VetBloom/Narkovet Consulting RVT Certificate Course in Principle Techniques in SA Perioperative Analgesia & Critical Patient Care with great success. Of all participants, 87 % passed the 4 certificate exams and are now proud holders of the VETERINARY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE IN PRINCIPLE TECHNIQUES OF SMALL ANIMAL ANESTHESIA, PERIOPERATIVE ANALGESIA & CRITICAL PATIENT CARE.
The Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds (VAN) Administrators have chosen our course to be featured on the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds Top 10 Favorite Things of 2017. We at VetBloom and Narkovet Consulting felt honored for having received this appreciation. Our 2018/19 course will be further improved by integrating more wet lab training in techniques of low flow anesthesia.

In addition our engagement in veterianry continuous education has been advancing, here in the US as well as in Asia. We began offering locoregioanl anesthesia and analgesia workshops for private practices. In collaboration with the European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies we orgaqnized anesthesia and analgesia courses for Chinese veterianrians in Shanghai including Locoregional Anesthesia and Analgesia workshops that were very well received, and we trained veterinarians at the the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Chinese Agricultarul University in Beijing.

Finally we began engaging more also in research activities helping to further improve the anesthesia and analgesia care our patients truly deserve.

Merry Christmas,

Bernd Driessen, DVM, PhD

The week-long ESAVS-CHINA’s Anesthesia I Course entitled Principles of Small Animal Anesthesia and Perioperative Analgesia in Shanghai and designed by NARKOVET CONSULTING was a great success! Fifty-seven participants from China, Taiwan, and SriLanka loved the morning lectures and afternoon loco-regional anesthesia & analgesia (LRAA) wet labs with Drs. Bernd Driessen, Sebastien Bauquier, and Stephan Mahler. The entire program included four outstanding interpreters and superb ESAVS-CHINA assistance, technical staff and generous equipment support from SONOSITE as well as practice materials from MILA International. China's veterinarians definitely move ahead in acquiring the knowledge and skills for establishing high level small animal veterinary anesthesia care!

Nursing skill mix in European hospitals: cross-sectional study of the association with mortality, patient ratings, and quality of care -- Aiken et al. -- BMJ Quality and Safety

Why do we need proper vet nurse training and education? Look here at the results of a study in human medical nursing out of UPENN covering multiple European countries:

http://qualitysafety.bmj.com/content/early/2016/11/03/bmjqs-2016-005567

Abstract

Objectives To determine the association of hospital nursing skill mix with patient mortality, patient ratings of their care and indicators of quality of care.

Design Cross-sectional patient discharge data, hospital characteristics and nurse and patient survey data were merged and analysed using generalised estimating equations (GEE) and logistic regression models.

Setting Adult acute care hospitals in Belgium, England, Finland, Ireland, Spain and Switzerland.

Participants Survey data were collected from 13 077 nurses in 243 hospitals, and 18 828 patients in 182 of the same hospitals in the six countries. Discharge data were obtained for 275 519 surgical patients in 188 of these hospitals.

Main outcome measures Patient mortality, patient ratings of care, care quality, patient safety, adverse events and nurse burnout and job dissatisfaction.

Results Richer nurse skill mix (eg, every 10-point increase in the percentage of professional nurses among all nursing personnel) was associated with lower odds of mortality (OR=0.89), lower odds of low hospital ratings from patients (OR=0.90) and lower odds of reports of poor quality (OR=0.89), poor safety grades (OR=0.85) and other poor outcomes (0.80

Objectives To determine the association of hospital nursing skill mix with patient mortality, patient ratings of their care and indicators of quality of care.
