Ruble, a yearling Carter Reservoir HMA bachelor, points out a gate sign on public land that reads: “WILD HORSE HERD AREA BOUNDARY. PLEASE CLOSE GATE.”

Maybe someone can explain this, because my understanding — and what I’ve been told by BLM staff — is that these fences and gates were primarily installed for livestock grazing allotments to manage cattle movement, not to contain or define wild horse boundaries.

Wild horses don’t recognize fences, allotment lines, or administrative maps. They migrate through areas they’ve occupied for generations. This sign is framed in a way that suggests the gate exists because of the horses when in Ruble’s opinion it should read “CATTLE ALLOTMENT BOUNDARY. PLEASE CLOSE GATE.” because that’s what this is, a cattle allotment fenceline gate.

It feels like the narrative keeps shifting responsibility onto wild horses for simply existing and moving across their historic range, while the larger impact of livestock infrastructure on public lands goes mostly unquestioned.

Public lands belong to all Americans — including the wildlife that has long inhabited them. Fair question: are these signs informing the public, or subtly reinforcing the idea that wild horses are the problem?
