Today marks a huge milestone for the Leafy Shenanigans colony.
One year ago, this colony consisted of 21 cats. Today, after trapping Rico “The Risk” Martinez, the colony has officially reached 100% sterilization.
Rico was the last unaltered cat in the colony, and true to his nickname, he made us work for it. As many TNR trappers know, the last cat is often the hardest cat. It takes patience, persistence, and a refusal to give up.
Over the past year, three colony cats became friendly through consistent, responsible feeding and daily interaction and were able to transition into indoor homes. The kittens born before we could complete sterilization were all taken into rescue and adopted into loving families.
That leaves just five cats in the colony today. Those five have maintained their territory for the past year and have not allowed new cats to move in and establish themselves.
This is exactly why TNR works.
A colony that once had 21 cats now has 5. No new litters. No population growth. Just a stable, healthy, managed colony that continues to shrink over time through sterilization, adoption, and natural attrition.
This accomplishment didn’t happen overnight. It took a year of dedication, countless hours of trapping and monitoring, and a commitment to showing up every day for these cats.
That’s what successful TNR looks like. 🐾
