Welcome! We have traditionally done emails before but decided to try out Facebook as our new way of communication. Below is our first “Pup Date”
Week 1 Bailey’s pups (Posted August 11th)
Howdy, and welcome to the first week of “pup” dates for your puppy. If you are receiving this email, it is because you have confirmed being a forever family for one of our puppies from this litter.
Our names are Tres & Stephanie Summerlin. Tres is the son of Newell & Kristi Summerlin of Devine and Stephanie is Tres’ wife. We are a branch off of the Rose Hill brand that you all have come to know and love. We live in Castroville, TX and love this tight knit community and small town feel. We have a lot of experience with Vizslas and the process of raising a puppy. We are very knowledgeable about Vizslas and are happy to answer any of your questions along this journey together! Welcome to the Vizsla family!
We have a three year old son, named Layne and a 1 year old son named Levi that you may see in some of our pictures in the future. We hope to involve our boys in some simple puppy raising processes. We hope that this will culture our puppies to be a bit more sensitive to little ones and hope that our boys learn a lot from this as well.
Typically, I'll send the updates on Sundays since that tends to be a slower day for us. I am thanking you in advance for your patience. I promise I am doing my best to get them to you in a timely manner but there is a possibility that you may get your update later that day, sometimes in the middle of the night, or even the day after.
Here’s some info on this litter that may come in handy:
Parents: Bailey & Chance
Born: 8-6-24
5.5 weeks old (pick out days): September 14th &15th
7.5 weeks old (pick up days): September 28th & 29th
# of males: 8
# of females: 2
If you want to do some research on AKC for the parents, here’s what you’ll need:
Bailey’s registration number is SS05863407 . Her full name is “Amell’s Smooth As Cream Bailey”
Chance’s registration number is SS11289201. His full name is “Gunner’s Second Chance.”
Both Bailey and Chance are highly intelligent, have human-like personalities, are laid back, loving, love the water, LOVE attention, and are great with other animals and humans of any age. Chance weighs about 65 pounds and Bailey is about 45 pounds.
There have been times that my email and pictures end up in someone's 'junk mail' or 'spam', so please send me a "got it" response back each week that you receive an update. If you need to get in touch with me right away, please text me - I’ll get on my email to check to see if you received the update, but I’m not great at checking my email constantly - I’m owning it!! This won’t be the only time you read this!
Throughout the next few weeks, you’ll get to see the puppies grow from little blobs like they are now to little “mini-Vizslas”. It's really cool to watch the transformations. The update will include a ton of information that will hopefully help you prepare for your new family member. Your puppy is being well taken care of and is receiving A LOT of love, socialization, and attention. Having you be a part of this journey from the very beginning is something we feel is very important. As you can see with this email, I can be long winded and I apologize for that. Making a smooth transition for our puppies from our home to yours is our ultimate goal.
They had their dew claws removed and tails docked when they were a few days old. That all went well. Their eyes and ears are still sealed shut. They will begin to open around 2 weeks old. Aside from eating, most of their day consists of sleeping and growing (and pooping!).
Our puppies are currently in our air conditioned garage attached to the house. They were born in a whelping box and will stay there for a few weeks. When they start making more of a mess than Bailey can handle, I'll move them to a pen. That'll be when they're closer to 4 weeks old. While they're still in the box, I'll introduce them to newspaper. Believe it or not, they learn at a very young age to go to the paper to pee/poop. It's just the beginning of potty training them.
At around 4 weeks old, I will put different colored collars on them so I can watch and begin to distinguish which pups do what. I won’t put collars on them until then because I don’t want to take a chance of the mommas trying to take them off or lick too much in the area of the collars causing sores, so it’s best just to keep them off for now.
As far as the process of picking out puppies, we like to wait until the puppies are around 5 weeks old before people start to choose. This will be a better time for everyone to see their personalities. They’ll be 5 weeks old on September 10th. We will have families come to pick out that weekend on September 14th and 15th. If you already know this date will not work for you, please let us know so that we can make other arrangements that work for your schedule. You’ll see a lot of these words - “pick out” and “pick up”. Just to clarify, pick out is the process of people coming to choose their pup; pick up is as it sounds . . . time to take your pup home! 🙂
How does pick out work? Depending on where you are in line is the order in which you'll pick your puppy out. We can visit more on that and when you're able to come choose a puppy at a later date. There's a science to arranging the pick of your puppy that seems to work. Here's an example: let's say that the family of the 1st pick (female) can’t come choose before the 2nd pick family can come due to their own schedule. When that happens, the 2nd pick family will come out and choose their first and second choices. I'll write them down on the back of a card so that no one can see (so it doesn't influence the family ahead of them that gets pick # 1). Confused yet? Don't worry! Somehow, and in a weird way, people almost always end up with their #1 pick even if you're one of the last to choose. If you’re last in line, please don’t worry! We’ve been in that spot many, many times when we purchased puppies, and it’s always worked out - we ended up with precious puppies that fit our family perfectly.
There are times that people live too far away or their schedule is such that they just can't come during that time and need me to pick for them. If this is the case for you, we'll talk about what you're looking for and I will do my best to choose one for you. I will also send pictures and videos to help you choose if you’re not able to make the pick-out trip.
We realize that some of you have had some type of experience with the Vizsla breed, and some have not. We highly suggest for those who do not have any experience, to make sure you do some (a lot of) research on behaviors, training, and some general information. Having some background knowledge will help you prepare your home and outside area and help you know how to handle situations that may come up. This breed is scary smart and can be tricky (manipulative). They know very well how to test their limits. They even know which one of their ‘humans’ is a pushover and can get away with more, and which human is the boss that gives more discipline.
If you don't already have a vet, please start your search soon. We ask (require) that you take your puppy to your vet no later than 3-5 business days after you pick up your puppy for a well visit and meet-n-greet.
Speaking of vet visits, the puppies will be going to our vet when they are 6 weeks old. They'll get their first puppy shot for Parvo/distemper and a health check. I'll give them dewormer when they're 2, 4, and 6 weeks old.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to either call, text or email us. Remember to keep in mind that I don't check my emails as quickly as I do a text or call, so you may want to create a contact in your phone with my number. Texting me is the fastest way for you to hear back from me. Don't forget to send back a "got it" on this email. Have a great weekend!!
Thanks,
Tres & Stephanie Summerlin
