We’re off again with sweet Spork ❤️‍🩹🚙

Our visit last week with an internal medicine specialist was productive, and we have several diagnoses we’re looking at for her condition. Concerns are currently histoplasmosis, pancreatic insufficiency, inflammatory bowel disease, a congenitally short colon, and….cancer.

She’s had labs sent out and as we await the results, we’ve been giving this little girl all the extra TLC. We are hoping for the best with her results, but secretly fearing the worst.

Spork’s vet wants to do an in depth ultrasound of her abdomen to get a better look at what’s going on in that belly. She’s scheduled for her ultrasound bright and early today.

Keep the positive vibes coming Spork’s way. We’re pulling for ya, baby girl 💜

Today starts heartworm injections for our 3 current heartworm positive pups. 🖕🏼❤️🪱

People don’t always agree with us and our requirement for adopters to give year round heartworm prevention to their dogs.

We say…we’re not the right organization for you then. It’s not personal. It’s not about egos or thinking they aren’t a loving, wonderful home. But we aren’t signing any of our dogs up with the possibility of having to go through this.

We’ll spend the next 2 days with completely sedated STAARs, injecting a 1.5 inch needle into their muscle with a drug called melarsomine dihydrochloride, the ONLY drug labeled for the treatment of ADULT heartworms. There’s no slow kill method for us. Our rescues deserve the gold standard. They also deserve to move on to their forever homes as quickly as possible and live the healthy, spoiled, running like the wind, heartworm free lives they deserve! 💪🏼❤️

Someone failed them once. We won’t be failing them again. ⭐️

We’re not sure what’s in the water lately but we’re blaming one of our co-founders for all the brachycephalics taking over! 🤣 What’s a little snoring and sensitive skin in rescue?

Seems fitting we’d start National Veterinary Technician Week with a medical case.

Our sweet little Spork has thrown us for a loop. This tiny gal hasn’t ever been quite right. Happy, eating, energetic one day, random bout of vomit, then back to normal. Never totally sick, never totally better.

She unfortunately took a turn for the worse last week. Her vomiting became consistent, her stools turned to uncontrollable diarrhea, and her attitude has been somber, at best.

We’ve been offering her round the clock supportive care — prescription diet, fluids, pain medication, anti-nausea medication, probiotics, and gentle baths to keep her clean. We’ve been working closely with our local vets, but it’s clear we need more specialized medical treatment. Little Spork deserves the best we can give her. We’re going to Veterinary Specialty Services of St. Louis on Thursday to meet with an internal medicine provider and run more diagnostics. This isn’t the first time we’ve taken a STAAR to specialty, and it won’t be the last.

We try not to ask for a lot, because we know how tight finances can be. We’re going to make an exception here. If you’re able, please consider donating to her medical care. If not, share her story. Let’s give her some extra love and support for the coming days.
