The wise chicken keeper considers a few eggs a trivial price to pay for the services a ratsnake provides!

We actually want to share a PSA about artificial eggs. Some keepers provide these to their hens to stimulate brooding. However, wildlife rehabilitators have had to treat snakes who have ingested these "eggs," because the snake will die from the blockage otherwise.

If you are going to use any sort of artificial egg, please take just a few minutes to make it safe. I'm glad some folks have never had one of their artificial eggs come up missing, but I can tell you it happens all too frequently.

This is not hard to do, you just need to make it impossible to swallow. The easiest way to do this is by gluing or screwing it to something that is too big to swallow.

Examples would include the floor of the coop, a small piece of flashing, a 4"x4" piece of 1/4" plywood, or a wooden dowel. You could also glue three eggs together. Any polyurethane glue, such as Gorilla Glue, should work fine for this purpose.

This is how the hobby ends!!!

Excuse us while we rant for a second.
This animal was just dropped off to us by a local animal control. This poor snake (red-tailed boa) was found just like this in a dumpster in Grand Prairie. It has been there at least 24 hours best dumpster owner/animal control can tell.
It has a bad respritory infection and is very cold. Last night's low was 43°f.
If you no longer want your animal or if you can not afford the veterinary care it is requiring, surrender it somewhere. Drop it off at a rescue or local animal control. DO NOT THROW IT IN THE DUMPSTER!!!
If you have any information about this snake dumping, recognize the snake, and/or know who the owner is, please contact us so we can forward you to the animal control that is involved.
